Christmas in Yorkshire with Mum

If you’re looking to spend the festive period in a gorgeous part of the world, steeped in history, culture and natural beauty, then it’s difficult to beat Yorkshire. It’s a great place to head with family or friends.

If you’d like to say thank you to your mother this Christmas, then you might invest in a present and a matching Christmas card. But a trip to Yorkshire might help to make the occasion extra special, even if you’re travelling from outside the county.

If you’re taking your mother, then there are a few locations which stand out as worth checking out. Let’s look at a few of them.

Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland

This festive event unfolds every year in York. You’ll find it at the rear of the York Designer Outlet, just at the intersection of the A64 and the A19. It runs from the 18th November right up to the 8th January. The biggest draw here is undoubtedly the Ice Factor, which is the largest outdoor ice rink in the North of England, built around a huge Christmas tree centrepiece. There’s also a cosy little ski-themed chalet, a vintage funfair, and an opportunity to visit Santa at his grotto. It’s a perfect day out, in other words, for grown-up kids.

York Minster

One of the biggest draws for tourists in York is the York Minster cathedral. The seat of the Archbishop of York, it’s a magnificent structure that’s particularly imposing at winter-time, especially if you visit at the right time of day. During Christmas, the cathedral hosts a range of special events, including classical concerts and carol singing. It’s a venue which offers an unparalleled atmosphere, and it’s worth checking out even if you’re not worshipping.

York Christmas Market

Like just about every major city in the UK, York offers a magnificent Christmas Market. With 2022 comes the 30th anniversary of St Nicholas Fair, and you can expect a small village of artisanal traders in little chalet-style huts. This year, for the first time, we see the Winter Hütte, which offers a Swiss-style menu courtesy of Andrew Pern. You might also consider a visit to Thor’s Tipi, which is a Nordic-inspired tent serving a range of festive beverages and cocktails. If you’re in search of a seasonal tipple, it’s where you’ll find it.

Castle Howard

The famous Castle is known for throwing extravagant celebrations to mark Christmas time. This year, the theme is ‘Into the Woods’, an event which follows on from last year’s sell-out ‘Christmas in Narnia’. Those huge imposing rooms are set to be transformed once again into a magical forest setting, thanks to some creative use of projectors. Make sure that you book your tickets in advance, to avoid disappointment.
