Sheffield United Promotion Chances, Will They Play in Premier League Next Season?

The Blades are doing everything they can to achieve promotion from the Championship this season. They seem to be on the right path so far, as they occupy the second place in the league with four points more than the third-placed Middlesbrough and a match in hand. The second place is very important for them, as the rules of the competition state that the first two teams are achieving a direct promotion to the Premier League, while teams ranked 3 to 6 are in a playoff for one more spot. And often that playoffs gave the fans some surprising outcomes.

Promotion Chances This Season for the Sheffield United

We can’t say that the season so far is not a good one for the Blades. In the summer of 2022, before the start of the current season, they stood at 10/1 odds for the Championship title. If you want to check out some of the best odds, visit wetten.com. The bookmakers placed Sheffield in fifth place before the season started, behind the hot favourites for a quick return Norwich City, followed by Watford, Middlesbrough, and West Brom. So by the looks of it, as a team that was predicted for fifth place, the second one seems pretty solid. It is notable to mention that Norwich City is 9th, Watford 8th, and West Brom in 10th place. Sheffield certainly took advantage of the rival’s poor form.

Brief History of the Sheffield United

The football club from South Yorkshire with more than 130 years of history was founded in 1889. Its stadium is called Bramall Lane, and you can find some of the best pizza places around it. Their colours are red and white stripes and their main rivals are Sheffield Wednesday, against whom is played the famous Steel City derby. The team can say that they won the former version of the Premier League in distant 1898, but they had more success with the oldest football competition in the world, the famous FA Cup. They won it on four occasions, the latest one was in 1925. Until recently they played in the Premier League, but in 2021 they were relegated to Championship. This season they just might return to play with the big boys.

Season So Far for the Blades

Coach Paul Heckingbottom can certainly be satisfied with his season overall. They were awfully quiet on the transfer market before this season, with their most important signing being Anel Ahmedhodzic from Malmo FF for 4.5 million Euros. He has been ever-present this season in the first team, playing on 25 occasions. At the age of only 23, he seems like a decent investment by the club. The majority of the incoming transfers were on loan. What is worrisome are the latest two matches in the league, as the team recorded two straight losses. The rivals were Millwall and Middlesbrough and their next rival is also though as they are going to play against Watford.

Expectations From the Blades in the Following Months

The defeat against Millwall this Saturday has worried the fans, but the team is still in a good position. There are still a lot of matches to be played, but 4 points and a match in hand are giving them confidence. Furthermore, they are still in another competition. They are playing in FA Cup against Tottenham Hotspur in the 1/8 finals. They are not favourites, but this is a cup competition and Conte’s boys aren’t looking that good, except for the record-breaking form of Harry Kane.

Conclusion

Sheffield United is on the road to achieving the promotion, and the red-and-white part of South Yorkshire has to be happy about it. The manager Paul Heckingbottom is doing wonders with pretty much the same team and he managed to keep them together this winter, even though there was some interest in the best players Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge. There is no doubt that the promotion to the Premier League will give the club even bigger chances to keep them, or at least sell them for a higher price.
