They want to get to know their partner better

The process of meeting and getting to know a prospective partner is quite extensive. Some people prefer a low-key relationship because they want time to get to know the person. Keeping a relationship private, at least at first, can give the partners enough freedom and time to learn each other’s strengths, weaknesses, likes, and dislikes.

Some of their friends might be unhappy

Your friends should be happy for you, right? They will certainly act like they are, but if they have been involuntarily single for a long time, they might not be happy for you deep down. There will always be someone who’s not thrilled, no matter how nice you are as a person. Don’t take this fact personally, but be aware of it. Your new relationship might even trigger hate in someone like an ex. Social media aren’t the best channels to go public. In fact, 64% of Americans say they have had a mostly negative effect on the situation in the country in general.

You might consider a relationship soft launch, but do discuss it first. It’s worth noting that as of 2024, 42% of people have argued with a partner about what is appropriate to share about their relationship.

They don’t want other people’s opinions

Making a relationship public is a chance for anyone and everyone to contribute. That is not conducive to relationship growth, especially at the beginning. People will always have something to say. It’s best to keep the relationship private if your partner fears other people’s opinions for whatever reason.

They are in another relationship

As of September 2024, 16% of married individuals and 21% of individuals in monogamous relationships admit to cheating. 64% regret having an affair across all relationship types. In fact, cheating is one of the main reasons people prefer to keep things low-key.

They want to avoid drama

When a lot of people learn about your relationship, some might disapprove of it, which can create unnecessary drama. Social media are a leading cause of drama themselves. 17% of adults have broken up over something that happened online, and 25% have argued with a partner about their excessive social media use. Shockingly, one or both partners’ excessive use caused 13% of divorces.

Personal preference

People with low-key personalities find discretion more aligned with how they function socially. Keeping details about the relationship or the whole relationship private makes certain people more comfortable. For others, there are specific preferences. For example, 32% of people share they have argued with a partner about being tagged in unflattering pictures on social media.

They are too focused elsewhere

People who are focused on their careers might feel a public relationship is too much to handle. They want to keep it low-key so they don’t have to pay a lot of attention to the relationship and its future.

They find intrusion harmful

Finally, some daters want to keep things low-key out of concern for their emotional safety. Other people’s curiosity, opinions, and judgment make them feel emotionally unstable and unsafe.
