A new long-term blueprint to manage urban gull populations across the North Yorkshire coast has been drafted by North Yorkshire Council, aiming to tackle the issues of noise, mess, and aggressive scavenging in seaside towns.

The proposed Urban Gull Strategy sets out a balanced framework for managing protected bird species—including herring gulls and kittiwakes—across Scarborough, Whitby, and Filey. Because all gull species are legally protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, the council cannot simply cull the birds. Instead, the strategy focuses on encouraging long-term coexistence by altering human behaviour and modifying the local environment.

The draft strategy has been built on national conservation data alongside feedback from Natural England, the RSPB, the Environment Agency, Yorkshire Water, and the Yorkshire Coast Urban Gull Partnership. The core plan focuses heavily on cutting off the gulls’ primary motivation for scavenging by improving public litter habits and changing how businesses handle food waste. It also outlines plans to deploy intensive cleaning crews to known bird-fouling hotspots, work alongside private landowners to install safe and lawful deterrent systems on buildings, and conduct ongoing scientific surveys to track nesting habits.

The draft strategy is scheduled for formal debate and public consultation during a meeting of the Scarborough and Whitby area committee on Friday 5th June 2026. Following the consultation process, the council’s executive will be asked to officially adopt the strategy later this year.

“Gulls are an intrinsic part of the North Yorkshire coast, and living alongside them is something coastal towns have done for generations. However, their increasing presence does bring challenges. This proposed strategy sets out a clear, balanced approach that recognises both the importance of protecting these species and the need to minimise their impact on residents, businesses and visitors. By focusing on practical measures such as reducing food waste, improving awareness and using effective deterrents, we can support long-term coexistence and ensure our coastal towns remain clean, safe and welcoming places for everyone.”

Cllr Liz Colling, chair of the Scarborough and Whitby area committee, commented:

“I am looking forward to the debate and discussion at the area committee on the urban gull strategy. I’m interested to see the proposals about how we can change our own behaviour on food waste and litter, and the impact it will make to the cleanliness of our coastal towns and the way that the gulls behave.”

A major new indoor entertainment venue is officially opening its doors today at the Trinity Walk shopping centre, breathing new life into a massive empty department store space.

Tenpin Wakefield launches today (Friday 29th May 2026), taking over the entire upper floor of the former Debenhams unit. Designed as a year-round, all-weather destination for the local community, the huge multi-activity hub brings a massive injection of family entertainment right into the heart of the city centre.

The state-of-the-art site features 24 modern bowling lanes alongside an impressive array of attractions, including two private karaoke rooms, a laser tag arena, three immersive escape rooms, and interactive darts. Visitors will also find a fully equipped arcade, pool tables, and an on-site cocktail bar broadcasting live games on Sky Sports and TNT Sports.

The arrival marks a major milestone for Trinity Walk’s 15th birthday year. With budget fashion giant Primark taking over the ground floor of the old Debenhams building, the iconic retail space has been completely revitalised. Centre bosses say the near fully-let shopping destination will provide a substantial boost to the local economy through increased footfall and job creation.

“We are incredibly excited to open the doors to Tenpin Wakefield this Friday. Wakefield is a fantastic city with a real sense of community and we wanted to create a venue that reflects that by bringing people together in a fun and welcoming environment. Our new site combines bowling, games and entertainment all under one roof, making sure there is something for everyone and we can’t wait to welcome our first guests.”

James White, Centre Manager of Trinity Walk, added:

“Wakefield city centre has been in desperate need of more leisure activities for years and this will address that in a big way here at Trinity Walk. Tenpin’s arrival brings the former Debenhams unit’s entire upper floor back into use and with Primark taking the whole ground floor, this iconic space will be brought back to life – heralding a new chapter for Trinity Walk in our 15th birthday year. More jobs, more visitors and more reasons to visit our almost fully-let shopping centre makes for a real boost for the local economy. Tenpin joining Trinity Walk is massive for us and for Wakefield as a whole.”

The Worsley family have lived here ever since, and Hovingham Hall was the childhood home of Katharine Worsley, who became the Duchess of Kent on her marriage in 1961.

As the record-breaking sunshine of National BBQ Week begins to ease across the UK, many households are finding themselves with a mountain of leftover burgers, half-opened packages, and un-grilled sides.

To help families cut down on food waste, save cash, and protect their health, food safety experts at High Speed Training have released critical guidance on how to store leftover BBQ food correctly. Improper storage can quickly turn into a breeding ground for nasty bugs like Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria.

Dr. Richard Anderson, Learning Experience Director at High Speed Training, warns that you cannot rely on a quick sniff-test to check if food is safe:

“Many people have leftovers after hosting a BBQ, and proper food storage is a critical line of defence against food poisoning. You might not realise that even if food looks and smells fine, it could still be unsafe if it has spent too long in the ‘temperature danger zone.’ By following a few simple steps, we can save money, protect our health, and help the planet.”

Dr Richard Anderson, High Speed Training

The Expert Rules for BBQ Leftovers

The Two-Hour Window: Always let hot food cool down completely before putting it into the fridge or freezer. However, it must be packed away within two hours of cooking so it doesn’t sit out in the “danger zone” for too long.

Ditch the Tin Cans: If you have leftover baked beans or canned fruit, never put the open tin straight into the fridge. The metal can actually transfer into the food and ruin the taste. Always transfer it into a sealed, airtight container.

Avoid the Fridge Door: The shelves inside the door are actually the warmest part of your fridge. Keep your leftovers on the main internal shelves where the temperature is consistently cold, and leave the door for condiments and juices.

The Three-Day Shelf Life: Label your leftovers with the date they were cooked. As a general rule, fridge leftovers need to be eaten within three days, while frozen items are best used within three months.

Keep It Covered: Uncovered plates in the fridge are a major cross-contamination risk, which is especially dangerous if anyone in your house has food allergies. Wrap everything tightly in foil or use sealed tubs.

The experts also recommend using the “First In, First Out” rule, eating your older leftovers before cooking fresh meals, and splitting big portions into single-serve containers for quick, easy lunches.

Instead of staring at a cold, clinical machine, young patients undergoing scans can now choose to be completely immersed in the worlds of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Marvel superheroes, Star Wars, or Disney Princesses. The child-friendly audio-visual intervention uses custom lighting, sound, and video to dramatically shift attention away from the intimidating medical setting.

Credit: Raoul Hollants

For hospitals, the impact of this high-tech escapism is proving to be a game-changer.

Nearly 1,000 solar panels have been installed across three leisure facilities in North Yorkshire as part of a major green initiative to reduce public energy expenditures by an estimated £2 million over the next 25 years.

The extensive rooftop installations have been completed at the Active North Yorkshire hubs in Ripon and Thirsk, as well as at Whitby Leisure Centre. Co-funded by North Yorkshire Council and the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority via the Mayoral Renewables Fund, which is backed by a £1 million grant from Great British Energy, the project represents a key milestone in the region’s legally binding strategy to become completely carbon-negative by 2040.

Over a 25-year lifespan, the new infrastructure is projected to prevent nearly 2,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. The panel distribution across the three facilities is broken down as follows:

Whitby Leisure Centre: Received the largest single deployment with over 400 panels.

Active North Yorkshire Ripon (The Jack Laugher Centre): Upgraded with 265 panels.

Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure and Wellbeing Hub: Equipped with 149 panels.

The project, managed and implemented by engineering contractor BCS Group, is part of a broader sustainability roll-out authorised by Metro Mayor David Skaith to update 16 community buildings across the territory. Furthermore, the green upgrades run alongside a wider £36 million leisure investment strategy previously approved by the council to modernise physical facilities in Selby, Skipton, Pickering, and Whitby, complemented by a separate £3 million fund to refresh gym equipment at 12 further municipal sites.

The operations director of BCS Group, Adrian Veitch (left), and the assistant manager at Active North Yorkshire – Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure and Wellbeing Hub, Tim Woodhouse (right)

“This is positive news. It is important that we continue to make this county a more environmentally friendly place to live, work and visit. One way of achieving that is by improving the efficiency of our public buildings and homes by embracing green technology and renewable energy, and we are carrying out significant work in this area. The installation of nearly 1,000 solar panels at these sites will help us generate energy more cheaply, reduce the amount we pay on our bills, and allow these savings to be invested in other areas of need across North Yorkshire.”

“Lowering bills and improving our environment means that 16 of our region’s community buildings, such as these facilities in Ripon, Thirsk and Whitby, will spend less on energy and more on what matters – supporting people. Through the Mayoral Renewables Fund, we are moving in the right direction, towards becoming the first region in England to reach carbon negative by 2040. It’s a big goal, but it’s one we can reach one step at a time all while supporting our communities right across York and North Yorkshire.”

“We are delighted to be working with North Yorkshire Council and helping to support the environmental and financial sustainability of these leisure centres. We take great pride in our work, and supporting the communities we live and work in is important to us as we want to have a positive impact. The installation of the solar panels will reduce the costs of the running of these fabulous centres. Ultimately, it will have a positive impact for the public and support the running of these vital community facilities – it is a pleasure to be involved.”

Crucially, it aims to break down the stigma of asking for help, as many people with military backgrounds are understandably proud, resilient, and used to just “getting on with it” – which means they often don’t seek support until things hit crisis point.

Carers Plus Yorkshire, Lily Brown, Office Manager and Elizabeth McPherson, CEO. Local Freemason groups are also rolling up their sleeves to volunteer and build stronger, sustainable community networks for these families.

The project will be a lifeline for people like Andy Baddley, a local veteran who served in the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards with tours in Northern Ireland, Cyprus, and the Gulf War, who now cares for his wife. Shockingly, Andy is far from alone, as around 73% of local veterans currently hold a caring role for a loved one dealing with dementia, mental health issues, or long-term conditions.

Here is what Andy Baddley had to say about the new funding:

“This funding means a great deal to veterans like me. It opens opportunities to take part in activities and outings that simply wouldn’t be possible otherwise. The individual support that comes with it is just as important; it really does make a difference to people’s lives.”

Elizabeth McPherson, Chief Executive Officer at Carers Plus Yorkshire, said:

“We’re very grateful to Yorkshire Freemasons for their generous grant. This £50,000 funding plays a crucial role in allowing us to deliver essential support to veterans. It enables us to offer both one-to-one support and group activities, helping veterans improve their wellbeing and stay connected within their communities, following their service to our country.”

Martin Eggermont from Yorkshire Freemasons, added:

“I’m really pleased we’ve been able to support our local military veterans through this excellent project from Carers Plus Yorkshire. I’m very proud Freemasons are giving something back to those who have given so much to our country.”

Split into three teams, the hopeful chefs had to prepare a high-pressure, three-course celebratory menu designed by top chef and judge Anna Haugh. The food was served to a packed room of 100 railway workers, volunteers, and train enthusiasts under the historic roof of the grand hall.

Station Hall only recently reopened to the public in September 2025 following a massive £11m structural and architectural facelift, timed to coincide with the museum’s 50th birthday celebrations. The huge 6,000-square-meter building has housed the museum’s prized collection of six Royal Train carriages since 1990. It also features major historical exhibits, including a rare 1921 WH Smith bookstall originally from London’s Waterloo Station and the actual funeral wreath from the locomotive that carried Queen Victoria’s coffin in 1901.

Craig Bentley, Director of the National Railway Museum, was among the guests who got to sample the semi-finalists’ dishes on the night.

“It was a real once-in-a-lifetime experience – being served a stunning 3 course meal in such a special location, surrounded by TV cameras.
