Amazon is creating over 1,000 new apprenticeships in the UK in 2025, offering opportunities in fields such as engineering, cyber security, HR, and marketing. A Doncaster family exemplifies the scheme’s impact, with four members pursuing careers at Amazon.
Chris Edwards joined Amazon in 2021, inspiring his son James to start a mechatronics apprenticeship the next year. His wife, Sam, a former stay-at-home mum, followed in 2023, and their daughter Georgie joined in 2024. They now work in engineering roles across Amazon’s Doncaster, Leeds, and Wakefield fulfilment centres.
“There are so many opportunities here. If you’re willing to put in the effort, Amazon has tons of different paths you can take,” said James.
“Watching mum go from being at home to studying something completely new has made us all so proud,” said Georgie.
“The team is my favourite thing about working at Amazon,” said Sam. “I feel so supported by everyone, particularly the managers.”
“The progression opportunities here are endless,” said James. “You’re never pigeonholed into a role, and every day is different.”
Chris and Sam plan to build long-term careers at Amazon, while James and Georgie look forward to advancing through different teams.
Amazon UK Country Manager John Boumphrey highlighted the company’s commitment to apprenticeships. “Apprenticeships have been a big focus for Amazon for over a decade, and we’re excited to continue creating opportunities for people to start and grow their careers,” said Boumphrey.
Amazon has offered 7,000 apprenticeships since 2013 and currently has 2,000 active apprentices. It has also invested £11 million since 2021 to support small businesses and the public sector with over 1,000 apprenticeships.
Pay starts at £13.50 or £14.50 per hour, equating to £28,000–£30,000 annually, with benefits including private medical insurance and a company pension plan.
