An original premium die-cut carton for the new Captain Sir Tom’s Gin which celebrates the national hero has been revealed.

Shipley-based premium print and packaging provider Herbert Walker were delighted to donate their time and expertise to create the original carton, which is made using high quality printed card with gold foil detail.

The carton puts the finishing touch on the spirited fundraising initiative from Skipton-based gin-makers Otterbeck Distillery, which began last year following a visit from Captain Sir Tom Moore himself. During a tour of the distillery, the centenarian veteran of WWII joked with distillery founders Dougie and Nicola Lampkin that he would like to have his own gin label.

This led to the Lampkins collaborating with Sir Tom and his family to create Captain Sir Tom’s Gin. Proceeds are donated to The Captain Tom Foundation, a supporter of numerous charities including mental health charity Mind and The Royal British Legion.

The new die-cut carton features an intricate foil design depicting Sir Tom with his now-famous walking frame, set against a navy background. The Herbert Walker team, headed by Managing Director Mike Lammas, worked closely with Otterbeck to ensure the design would suit the aesthetic of the gin label while embodying the qualities of Sir Tom Moore himself.

“We really wanted this carton to have a classic, timeless style – which is in no way overdesigned or overcomplicated,” commented Mike. “Our aim was to create a carton which was simple and executed very, very well. That’s the way Sir Tom was – enormous determination and fortitude and care for others, a tremendous man in every respect.”

Specialities of the West Yorkshire premium packaging firm include die making, foiling and embossing as well as the technical ability to develop flat designs into practical 3D printed pieces. With every client, its aim is to elevate and articulate the brand by delivering exceptional quality visual impact and tactile appeal.

Mike continued, “We’d been speaking with Otterbeck to share a bit of our expertise on premium packaging for spirits, but when they told us about this project with Sir Tom, we jumped at the chance to be involved. Sir Tom’s story is close to the hearts of people across the country. He’s been inspirational, particularly here in his home county of Yorkshire, and it’s been an honour to work with fellow Yorkshire brand Otterbeck to produce this packaging in aid of his Foundation.”

Nicola Lampkin said, “The carton that Herbert Walker have created for Captain Sir Tom’s Gin is striking and really gives it the premium look and feel we have been working to achieve. We were immensely pleased when Mike and his team volunteered to get involved, and we couldn’t be more delighted with the end result.

“It has been an amazing journey to bring this gin to market, not least working with Captain Sir Tom and his Foundation to offer support to some truly incredible charities. We’re delighted to be able to do our bit to help such worthwhile causes. Captain Sir Tom has captured the imagination of the world and we’re proud to have distilled a very special gin with a very special man.”

Matured in American bourbon oak barrels at 65% ABV for 8 weeks and bottled at 50% ABV, the gin has subtle aromas of vanilla which blend with a herbaceous undertone giving a complex but smooth, warming and mellow finish. It is available to purchase now online at www.otterbeckdistillery.co.uk.
