It’ll soon be the first weekend without any restrictions in place.
And whatever your stance on that may be, you can’t argue that we all deserve to celebrate the step back towards normality in style.
If that’s on the cards for you this weekend but you’re left without plans – fear not, Wave’s Summer Garden Party has got you covered and is set to take over the Beehive on Saltaire Road this Saturday.
With an enviable line-up of DJs, good vibes guaranteed and some next-level scran on offer, we caught up with event organisers Joe Murray & Josh Illingworth, to learn more about what to expect from Costa Del Shipley’s most exciting summer event.
In a nutshell, what is the Wave Summer Garden Party?
Our 2021 Summer Garden Party is the first big push in a planned series of music events for the local area. Our aim is to create a community-based entertainment platform for Shipley and the surrounding areas. We feel local music events have fallen off in the past few years, especially with COVID and as we both enjoyed great (but now extinct) Bradford events in the past, we wanted to give something back and also provide fresh talent and artists with an opportunity to play out again.

You collaborated with the Beehive on Saltaire Road for this event, what made you choose the venue?
Well, we watched the space transform from the Shipley Pride to the Beehive a few years ago and noticed the outdoor area at the back of the pub take shape. It was practically crying out for an event like this. We also both attended a few of the Bradford Beehive gigs in the past, we knew our event would be perfect for the venue. We met with the owner and saw eye to eye on the idea and here we are today!
You’ve got a great line-up, tell us about the DJs playing and the type of music we can expect? Are there any that you’re particularly excited about?
So when we set Wave up we didn’t want to limit ourselves with being a genre-specific event. We wanted to work more of a feel and a vibe and have put great thought into this event’s line-up and programming.
All of the artists involved are incredibly talented, but if we had to pick a couple we are most looking forward to seeing play, it would have to be our two live acts Rupcha Farms and Owl Mask.
Rupcha Farms are a new Alt Rock/Rap duo with some exciting fresh material to share off their new EP and Owl Mask puts on a fantastic show of live constructed music via modular synthesisers.

Another collaboration is with Dirty Dawgs BBQ who we featured on TYP a few weeks ago. What can people expect from them and why were they a great popup for the event?
From the start we wanted an all-in-one experience for our event, this includes food so that people wouldn’t have to leave the venue to eat and potentially miss out on the fantastic talent we have playing. We also wanted to provide a local business with the opportunity to operate and bring some business in for them much like we are for the pub.
As for Dirty Dawgs BBQ, they came on a recommendation and once we had seen what they had on offer, we knew it would fit with the vibe of the event. They provide a range of delicious topped hot dogs and dirty fries. We are actually both really looking forward to having this later on in the day when we start to get peckish.
Walk us through the day itself, when will it start and end? How will the day proceed and what kind of vibe do you expect throughout the day?
So early doors we have some chilled Nu-Disco and Balearic house moving onto our first live act at around 4pm, Rupcha Farms. After that, we’ve got a variety of House, Tech, Minimal, Funky, Disco & Ghetto Funk throughout the late afternoon.
At about 9pm we have our second live act Owl Mask. After this, at around 10pm we will move the event inside the Old Shades Bar below the pub. This underground bar has an amazing rustic atmosphere to reflect the heavier music being played post 10pm.
Garage, Drum & Bass & Techno are on the menu until close at 2am. So yeah, a good variety and hopefully something for everyone throughout the day.

Why should people put the Wave Summer Party in their diaries?
I mean we selected the first weekend without any restrictions for a reason, it goes without saying that people have been cooped up for too long without having some release through a few beers and a good dance! So, people should definitely come down and check us out for their sanity! 😉
Other than that, most festivals have been cancelled this year and we feel there is a thirst for something like this is off the scale. Think a mini slice of Beatherder without the hot, sticky tents!

What else should we know about the Wave Summer Party?
This isn’t the first and last event we will be doing, without saying too much we have big plans for future events in the coming months so keep an eye out. Also, any new/upcoming artists out there wanting to get involved, contact us via Facebook or Instagram and we will gladly look at your material.
One last thing, we will be offering a limited run of custom-designed screen-printed T-Shirts that will be on sale in the next week. So if you would like to support Wave receive something in return then check that out when the link goes live.
Thanks for having us!
