Yorkshire’s first single malt whisky distillery has teamed up with Waitrose to launch a new whisky that puts regenerative farming in the spotlight.
Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, based in Hunmanby, has unveiled Filey Bay Nurture, the first release in a new ‘Regenerative Editions’ series. The whisky is now available in 197 Waitrose stores across the UK, including branches in York, Leeds, Sheffield, Harrogate, Otley and Hull.
This marks the first time the distillery has partnered with a national supermarket. The launch reflects a shared commitment to sustainability and a more nature-friendly way of working with the land.
Filey Bay Nurture is a single malt whisky made entirely from homegrown barley and farm-sourced water. Matured in ex-bourbon and ex-red wine casks, it’s described by the distillery as “soft, fruity and down to earth.”
Tom Mellor, co-founder of Spirit of Yorkshire and a third-generation farmer, said the whisky is a tribute to their approach to farming.
“Farming is about achieving a balance. If we take out more than we put back in, future generations will pay the price,” Mellor said. “Filey Bay Nurture focuses on the soil. We’re passionate about protecting biodiversity, water, and climate while improving soil health for the long term.”
Spirit of Yorkshire is one of the few distilleries worldwide using 100% regeneratively farmed barley. Mellor said the whisky represents a clear connection between field and bottle.
Waitrose spirits buyer John Vine said the whisky aligns with the supermarket’s Farming for Nature initiative.
“Filey Bay Nurture, and the Spirit of Yorkshire’s approach to field-to-bottle whisky fits perfectly with our drive towards regenerative farming,” Vine said.
Filey Bay Nurture is bottled at 46.5% ABV and is priced at £60 for a 70cl bottle. It’s available in selected Waitrose stores, in Jersey and Guernsey, and online at www.waitrose.com.
