York’s chocolate roots run deep, and this summer, one local restaurant & bar is raising a glass to that heritage with a bold, boozy twist. The Old Liquor Store, based in the former Terry’s Chocolate Works, has unveiled a limited-edition cocktail to celebrate World Chocolate Day, and it’s something special.
Created by resident mixologist Paddy Lewis, the Aztec is a fiery chocolate martini packed with rich flavours and a kick of chilli. Served throughout June and July at the bistro, it’s a tribute to both the building’s past and the Aztec civilisation, who were among the first to turn cacao into a drink.
Here’s how to make it at home…

Ben Williams, owner of The Old Liquor Store, said: “Creating the Aztec cocktail for World Chocolate Day is a fitting tribute to this wonderful building, which was once home to Terry’s Chocolate Works. Giving the team free rein to experiment is what we’re all about — especially when it comes to chocolate.”

This cocktail joins a growing list of chocolate drinks on the OLS menu, including creations like the Chocolate Orange Martini, the After Eight, and even a Chocolate Orange Negroni.
World Chocolate Day is celebrated each year on 7th July, honouring the introduction of chocolate to Europe back in 1550. The Aztec cocktail nods to those early cacao drinks with a contemporary edge and a Yorkshire twist.
