Thwaites has added another historic pub to its collection with the purchase of The Buck Inn in Malham, deepening its ties to one of the most visited spots in the Yorkshire Dales.
Dating back to 1874, The Buck is a familiar sight in the village. With 11 bedrooms, a traditional bar and restaurant, and a spacious outdoor area, it’s a favourite stop for walkers and visitors exploring the nearby Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and Janet’s Foss. The inn is also dog-friendly and known for serving home-cooked food made with local, seasonal ingredients.
This brings Thwaites’ portfolio of managed pubs with rooms and hotels to 23. The Buck becomes the company’s second site in Malham, joining The Lister Arms, and strengthens a cluster of Thwaites inns across the Dales. These include The Red Lion in Burnsall, The Golden Lion in Settle, the Harts Head in Giggleswick and The Gamecock in Austwick.
Commenting on the purchase, Thwaites Chairman Rick Bailey said: “We’re thrilled to be expanding our growing family of hotels and inns, and delighted to bring The Buck in Malham on board. We have been after this pub for over a decade and have huge confidence that we can capitalise on the existing success of The Lister Arms in Malham.”
He added: “The Buck has tremendous heritage and character and with a bit of investment it will become another firm favourite with visitors to Malham in what has become a walking mecca of the north.”
Set on the Pennine Way and at the foot of Malham Cove, the village has long been popular with hikers. Its dramatic limestone scenery has featured in TV and film, including Julia Bradbury’s Best Walks with a View, The Dales with Adrian Edmondson, and even as a location in The Lord of the Rings.
The Buck Inn will continue to trade as normal while plans for future investment are developed.
