Independent Yorkshire brewery T&R Theakston is marking a strong start for Nowt Peculier, its new alcohol-free version of the legendary Old Peculier, with over 15,000 bottles sold in the first two months.
The beer has been praised by drinkers for its similarity to the original, offering ale fans a full-flavoured, alcohol-free alternative. Brewed to the original Old Peculier recipe using Fuggle, Challenger and Progress hops, it delivers a dark ruby ale with rich complexity and subtle notes of cherry and banana, finished with a gentle hop bitterness.
The early success has helped secure a national listing in 170 Sainsbury’s stores, with the brewery in talks with other retailers to further expand its presence. Theakston is also building distribution in pubs and bars through Heineken, Star Pubs, LWC and other wholesalers, as demand for 0.0% options continues to grow.
Richard Bradbury, Managing Director of Theakston’s Brewery, said:
“Nowt Peculier is one of our first ventures into alcohol-free beer in the brewery’s near 200-year history and maintaining our reputation for high quality beers was absolutely paramount for us in the creation of Nowt Peculier.
“We are thrilled by the warm reception the beer has received so far and look forward to extending Nowt Peculier’s reach even further across the on and off trade this year. The low and no alcohol beer category continues to grow in the UK, and thanks to our use of the highest quality ingredients, the expertise of our brewers and remarkable new technology, we are pleased to bring something new to the category and staying true to our commitment to brew legendary beers.”
Theakston’s use of advanced filtration has allowed the brewery to remove the alcohol while keeping the character of Old Peculier intact.
