Wellington Place is welcoming a fresh addition to its growing line-up of food and drink spots, with independent Japanese fusion outlet WAKI MAKI set to open its doors at 11 Wellington Place.
First launched in 2021 at Leeds University Student Union, WAKI MAKI has built a strong following with its handmade sushi and poke bowls. The new site marks the business’s first step into Leeds City Centre, offering more people the chance to enjoy its creative take on Japanese street food.
The venue occupies a 933 sq ft unit on the ground floor, with space for around 30 people inside and 12 more outside when the weather allows. It will serve a variety of fresh dishes made to order in front of customers. Popular menu items include jumbo sushi rolls, poke bowls, katsu curries, gyozas, miso soup and rice boxes. The Wellington Place branch will also offer catering services for meetings and events.

WAKI MAKI’s arrival follows the recent launch of Bean Coffee Roasters and adds to a strong mix of food and drink destinations already in place, including Mad Frans, Good Luck Club, Sociable Folk, Hoist House, Café Nero, Pret A Manger, Sesame and Veeno.
Dominique Murray, associate marketing director at MEPC, said: “At Wellington Place, we are committed to offering an exciting and diverse selection of food and drink experiences for our community. WAKI MAKI brings something truly unique with its fresh, made-to-order fusion menu, and we’re thrilled to welcome them as part of our ever-growing neighbourhood.”
Founder Jonathan Phillips added: “We are very excited to be joining the Wellington Place community as we’ve wanted to open a site within this vibrant and bustling neighbourhood for some time. We can’t wait to introduce people to WAKI MAKI and share our passion for delicious, high-quality Japanese street food.”
