Food lovers and railway enthusiasts alike can rejoice as Wensleydale Railway’s much-loved fish and chips experience, the Wensleydale Fryer, returns for another year. Offering a unique combination of stunning Yorkshire Dales scenery and classic British comfort food, these heritage train journeys are set to run monthly from April to October.
The first service departs on Saturday 12th April, with further dates each month until autumn. Passengers will board a heritage diesel-hauled train at Leeming Bar and travel to Leyburn, all while enjoying a hearty meal of locally sourced fish and chips, mushy peas, bread and butter, and unlimited tea or coffee, served at their table by the railway’s dedicated volunteers. A bar service will also be available for those who fancy something extra.
Nick Keegan, Marketing and Fundraising Manager at Wensleydale Railway said: “Our Wensleydale Fryer trains proved very popular with customers in 2024. It’s great to be able to offer this classic food on board our trains again this year. We expect demand to be high and have already sold all tickets for our April and May dates so early booking is advised to avoid disappointment. We look forward to welcoming people on board the Wensleydale Fryer soon!”
The two-hour experience departs from Leeming Bar at 1:30 pm, with a short stop at Leyburn for a comfort break before the return journey. In addition to traditional cod and chips, passengers can also opt for sausage and chips or a gluten-free fish and chips alternative.
For those looking to delve into local history, there’s also the chance to take a free guided tour of Leeming Bar’s beautifully restored 1920s station building, offering a glimpse into railway life in the early 20th century.
Tickets for this nostalgic experience cost £35 per adult and £15 per child, which includes both the train journey and meal. Early booking is highly recommended, as demand is already proving high.
