Yorkshire Chippies Make the Cut in National Good Fry-day Awards

There are few British foodie traditions as cherished as a chippy tea on a Friday, and never more so than on Good Friday itself. Whether it’s the irresistible smell of salt and vinegar in the air or the comforting crunch of batter and chips, fish and chips have long been a staple of Easter weekend.

But this beloved ritual has roots that go far deeper than simple habit. The tradition of eating fish on Good Friday dates back to Roman Catholic customs, when meat from warm-blooded animals was avoided to honour the crucifixion of Jesus. While not a biblical requirement, many still observe the practice today as a mark of respect.

To celebrate this uniquely British tradition, the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) has revealed its list of the top 40 fish and chip takeaways in the UK as part of the National Fish & Chip Awards 2025. Among the national winners are five Yorkshire fish and chip shops, recognised for their exceptional quality, customer service and dedication to the craft.

Here are the Yorkshire chippies flying the flag for the region in this year’s awards:

Locker’s Fish & Chips, Redcar
A seaside favourite, Locker’s is known for its perfectly fried fish, crisp chips and classic coastal charm. It is a staple for Redcar locals and day-trippers alike.

Mister C’s, Selby
A well-loved family business in the heart of Selby, Mister C’s has earned a loyal following with its consistently high standards and friendly service.

The Fish Bank, Sherburn-in-Elmet
This standout spot in Sherburn-in-Elmet combines traditional fish and chips with a fresh, modern feel. It is a go-to for quality and flavour.

The Scrap Box, York
Don’t let the name fool you. The Scrap Box is serious about fish and chips. It has built a strong reputation in York for serving up tasty, well-portioned meals that keep customers coming back.

Two Gates Fisheries, Barnsley
A firm favourite in Barnsley, Two Gates is known for generous portions, top-notch ingredients and great value. It is easy to see why it made the list.

President of the NFFF, Andrew Crook, said:
“Good Friday is one of the busiest days of the year for fish and chip shops across the country. Making the top 40 list is a huge achievement and a testament to the hard work these businesses put in day after day. If you’re lucky enough to live near one of them, they’re well worth a visit.”

So whether you’re a Good Fry-day regular or just in the mood for some proper fish and chips, these Yorkshire takeaways are the perfect places to indulge.

And if you think your local deserves to be on next year’s list, keep an eye out. Entries for the next round of awards will open later this year.
