Yorkshire’s first single malt whisky distillery is raising a glass this week after winning gold at one of the world’s most respected spirits competitions.
Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery’s Filey Bay Peated Finish #3 has been awarded a gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC), scoring an impressive 93 out of 100 in the Other Single Malt Whisk(e)y category.
The award is a first for the distillery at this international level and places the Filey Bay expression alongside some of the best whiskies in the world.
David Thompson, Co-founder and Managing Director at Spirit of Yorkshire, said: “The San Francisco World Spirits Competition is the oldest and largest competition of its kind and sets the industry standard for excellence. Medal winners range from globally renowned distilleries to rising small-batch producers like Spirit of Yorkshire.
“We’re delighted and proud to be the only English whisky of the 14 gold medallists and to win our first SFWSC gold with this special whisky that brings a taste of the west coast of Scotland to the east coast of Yorkshire.”

Filey Bay Peated Finish #3 is known for its subtle sweet smokiness, with layers of coastal, citrus and caramel notes. It’s made from 100% homegrown, regeneratively farmed barley and water sourced on site, offering a true field-to-bottle experience.
The competition, organised by The Tasting Alliance, is known for its rigorous judging process. Spirits are blind tasted and assessed by expert judges, with awards given only to entries that meet the highest quality standards.
Filey Bay Peated Finish #3 (46% ABV) retails at £65 and is available from the distillery shop in Hunmanby, online at spiritofyorkshire.com and through selected specialist retailers across the UK.
Spirit of Yorkshire is one of just a few distilleries in the world that grows all the barley used in its whisky production — a point of pride for the team and a key part of what makes Filey Bay whiskies unique.
