Lishman’s of Ilkley has cemented its status as one of the UK’s premier artisan butchers after securing two prestigious Diamond Awards at the 2026 Smithfield Awards. The Ilkley-based business was the only butcher in the country to win in two separate categories at the national ceremony held at Butchers’ Hall in London.

The Smithfield Awards, organised by the Q Guild of Butchers, are considered the most challenging product evaluations in the meat trade. Lishman’s Dry Cured Streaky Bacon achieved a flawless score of 70/70 to win the ‘Home Cured Bacon’ category, with judges describing it as a “wonderful, faultless product.” The shop’s Game & Red Wine Pie also took home the top prize in the ‘Speciality Game Meat Product’ category, scoring an exceptional 69/70.

Beyond the Diamond accolades, the butcher picked up four Gold Awards for its Heritage Breed Rib Eye Steak, Thick Champion Pork Sausage, Pork Pie, and Beech Smoked Chicken, as well as two Silver awards.

Emma Lishman of Lishman’s of Ilkley said:

“Winning Diamond Awards for our home‑cured bacon and game products means a great deal to us. These are categories close to our hearts and it’s genuinely humbling to have the care, sourcing and craftsmanship behind them recognised at this level.”

Founded in 1986 by David Lishman and now run alongside his daughter, Emma, the shop has evolved into a national destination for quality meat and charcuterie. Following a major refurbishment in 2022, the store now features a specialized Himalayan salt-block aging room to maximize the flavor of its dry-aged beef.

Gordon Wallace, Q Guild Manager, added:

“To be named best in class in two categories and win two Diamond Awards… is a fantastic result. Their success is a real testament to the quality and consistency of their products and reflects the innovation and excellence driving the craft butchery sector forward.”

If you have ever spent a Saturday morning watching the famously long queue stretch down the street outside Bettys, you will know that getting a table can often be a test of patience. In a move that feels like a real milestone for the Yorkshire icon, that is all about to change.

For the first time, Bettys has announced it will introduce daytime reservations at its Ilkley café and at The Spindler Gallery in Harrogate. This is a significant shift for the family-owned business, which has traditionally operated on a walk-in basis for its main café service.

Nicky Sellers, Director of Operations at Bettys, explained that the move is all about making the experience more accessible for everyone:

“This is a milestone for Bettys and reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing the guest experience while preserving the timeless charm that has made Bettys a Yorkshire institution. We realise that the queue can be a barrier for some customers and we want to be able to offer everyone the Bettys experience that suits them best.”

It is a stunning spot that houses the world’s largest single collection of Spindler marquetry – essentially “paintings in wood” made from intricate veneers. The collection was started by Bettys’ founder, Frederick Belmont, in the early 1930s and remains one of the town’s most impressive cultural gems.

Over in Ilkley, the café is also opening up its diary for daytime bookings. This site has a rich history dating back to 1896 and is home to the massive La Chasse (‘The Hunt’) marquetry panel, which is the largest ever produced by the Spindler studio. Following a 2016 refurbishment, the café features hand-carved sheaves of corn by local artisans.

Whether you are a local who has been avoiding the queues or a visitor planning a special trip, this change means you can finally guarantee your spot for a Fat Rascal or a signature blend without the wait. These new daytime slots sit alongside the existing reservation options for Evening Dining and the traditional Afternoon Tea.

Ilkley butcher Lishman’s of Ilkley has been recognised on the national stage, winning a prestigious award at this year’s Smithfield Awards in London.

The renowned Yorkshire butcher took home the Masterclass in Meat Display award, impressing judges with its expertly crafted counter display, which features a standalone charcuterie section and a Himalayan salt wall designed for dry-ageing beef. Judges praised the butcher’s brilliant use of colour, artisanal presentation, and beautiful products.

The award was presented to Lishman’s by Prof John Gilliland OBE DSc, a leading authority on sustainable agriculture and food security. Organised by the Q Guild of Butchers, the Smithfield Awards celebrate the UK’s finest craft butchery products across multiple categories, from sausages and bacon to steak, game, and BBQ products.

Lishman’s also secured three Gold awards, the highest possible rating, for its Boston Rib (Best Butchers Steak), Ham Hock Terrine (Al Fresco Dining), and Pheasant Paupiette (Speciality Game). On top of that, they received Silver awards for their Thick Champion Sausage and Yorkshire Bratwurst.

Emma Lishman of Lishman’s said: “We are delighted to have won the Masterclass in Meat Display. The team are really passionate about showcasing the products we offer in an appealing display, highlighting our dry-aged heritage breed beef, particularly in our window. It’s great for the team that this has been recognised with such a prestigious award.”

Stuart Baker, Richard Dean and Jack Harrison put the award-winning counter display together

The success didn’t stop there—Lishman’s employee Jack Harrison was also shortlisted for the Q Guild Young Butcher of the Year Award, which celebrates the next generation of butchery talent. Described as a genuine asset to the business, Jack was recognised for his popularity with customers, dependability, versatility, drive, pride, and warmth.

Gordon Wallace, Q Guild Manager, said: “A key factor that sets the independent butcher apart from the supermarket is the counter display. Thoughtfully arranged and artisanal in presentation, it showcases specialty cuts, freshness, and authenticity—subtly yet powerfully conveying expertise, knowledge, and trustworthiness. Judges were highly impressed with Lishman’s of Ilkley’s counter, which offers a vibrant balance between tradition and modern appeal.”

Founded in 1986 by David Lishman, Lishman’s of Ilkley has grown from a single shop into a nationally recognised name, expanding into charcuterie in 2010.

Whether you’re hankering after a balti or can’t wait to tuck into a spicy vindaloo, there are some great Indian restaurants in Ilkley. If you’re a spicy food lover like me, chances are you’re a big fan of Indian/South Asian Cuisine.

Luckily for those who live in Ilkley – you don’t have to look far to find a quality curry. There are lots of other restaurants in Ilkley, but they’re not the focus of this roundup.

The restaurants in this roundup are each unique in their own right, specialising in cuisine from different regions of South Asia and offering their own atmosphere and charms. But what they all have in common is they serve up a storm in the kitchen and offer friendly, attentive service that’ll leave you satisfied. So if you’re struggling to decide where to eat out tonight – use my helpful guide to find the perfect Indian Restaurant in Ilkley for you!

Indian Restaurants in and around Central Ilkley

Kashmiri Aroma

Kashmiri Aroma, Coutance Way, Burley in Wharfedale, Ilkley LS29 7HQ

With four restaurants across Yorkshire and another on the way soon, Kashmiri Aroma’s gained a great reputation as the go-to restaurant of choice for spice lovers in the area. “Extensive” would be an understatement when describing the menu. As a result, little known regional dishes sit alongside the nation’s favourites – offering comfort to both the experienced and inexperienced Indian cuisine lovers.

Although the menu’s very big – the kitchens well equipt and the cheffing team are talented. Service is pleasant – and whenever I’ve visited they’ve been welcoming and attentive. Feeling overwhelmed by the choice on offer might be an issue for some who want the best they have to offer – but each dish is described excellently so you have a real understanding of what you’re about to order.

My food recommendation

Feeling indulgent? Try their Special Tandoori Sizzler Mix for 2 – it’s great for sharing and comes with a variety of meats and fish.

Panache

Panache, 19-21 Church Street, Ilkley LS29 9DR

10 years ago, Panache opened their doors for the first time in Ilkley. Friendly, relaxed and attentive are all easy ways to describe the service here. When I visited last, albeit some time ago, the food was delicious.

Their menu’s pretty extensive, but it’s careful not to be overwhelming so you’ve got just about enough choice. Curries are the main event here, but they’ve got other dishes available too, including my favourite – Tandoori Sizzlers. The portion sizes are a little smaller than you’ll find elsewhere, but they make up for that through how flavoursome the dishes are. Fancy a takeaway? Panache’s a great choice and although in my experience, it’s better to eat in – you can’t go far wrong.

My food recommendation

I’m always drawn to the dishes that are less commonly found across Indian Menus unless I’ve heard a stellar review of the more generic dishes. On my visit, I found that their seafood is exceptionally fresh and as a result, the King Prawn Dhall Saag really impressed.

Seema’s

Seema’s, 9 Wells Road, Ilkley LS29 9JB

Few leave Seema’s without a smile on their face. Whether you’re planning a meal out for a relaxed catch-up or a special occasion – the great service and diverse menus sure to delight even the pickiest eaters.

Well known for having some of the most delicious curries in the area, they specialise in contemporary Bengalis cuisine. As a result, those looking to try something a little different won’t be disappointed. Although I’ve not yet had the opportunity to sample their newly released menu – when I visited I was very impressed all round.

A word of warning – it’s a small, popular restaurant with limited covers available. As a result, I recommend you call ahead to avoid disappointment. Their previous menu had a real diversity about it, with some less known dishes featuring heavily.

My food recommendation

The only dish I can recommend is the Karachi Lamb. It comes piping hot and has a balanced flavour. I spotted a Tandoori Sizzler being brought out to another table – which sparked a dash of food envy, so maybe one to consider.

Moghul

Moghul. 111 Main Street, Burley in Wharfedale, Ilkley LS29 7JN

If you’re looking for a delicious curry in a cosy, intimate restaurant – look no further than Moghul. Just outside of the attractions of Ilkley town centre in Burley-in-Wharfedale (just a short train journey or brisk walk away) although I’m yet to eat at Moghul myself, I have it on good authority that it has a lot going for it.

Portion sizes are big – but they’re not shy to give you a doggy bag to take home. Something that makes Moghul increasingly popular is their bring your own booze (BYOB) policy. Not only will that make it an affordable meal out, but it also ensures a vibrant atmosphere.

My Food Recommendation

Although I can’t give you my own opinion just yet, a frequently recommended dishes is Machli Madras, which is something a little out of the ordinary.

The Cow and Calf is perhaps Ilkley’s most well-known pub. It’s found within spitting distance of the Cow & Calf rocks (hence the name.) This makes it one of the most popular pubs in the area for walkers and the “outdoorsy.” With that in mind, the rural charm of the pub can’t be overlooked. They have a great selection of drinks available, with everything from local ales and lager, to a well stocked back bar. The food at The Cow and Calf is fantastic, and when the weather’s good, there’s no better place for an afternoon drinking session!

Bar T’at is a trendy pub in the centre of Ilkley which offers a friendly welcome. Having been refurbished recently, they have a reputation for their extensive knowledge of craft gins, beer and a spectrum of boozy delights. They serve pub food created around seasonal ingredients from local suppliers. Their extensive menu is well thought out and offers homely comfort food. The team at Bar T’at boast that they serve the best chips in Ilkley and although we’re sure that some of the other pubs in Ilkley might challenge that – you’ll have to try them for yourselves and make up your own mind. Aswell as the well-decorated interior, they have a pleasant outdoor area – which makes it a great place to drink in the summer months.

The Ilkley Moor Vaults is a popular pub with a long history. They’ve been part of Ilkley’s makeup for years, although this doesn’t stop them from maintaining a contemporary feel. Perhaps best known for their beer garden, they have an impressive selection of beer and cask ales available and an extensive selection of gins, ciders and spirits. What’s more, they complement their drinks with a menu full of pub classics including everything from homemade pies to a variety of tasty burgers.

The Crescent Inn

The Crescent Inn is undoubtedly one of the most popular pubs in Ilkley. If you’ve ever driven through Ilkley on a warm summer’s day, you’d be hard pushed not to notice the scores of patrons outside the pub. The building which houses The Crescent Inn (or The Crescent as it’s known locally) dates back to 1860 and is an impressive affair. Inside, the decor is welcoming, colourful and contemporary.

Behind the bar, you’ll find a focus on real ale, as well as an extensive selection of wines and spirits. The Crescent also offers rooms, and this makes it one of the most popular places for visitors to Ilkley to drink. Their menu of pub food includes everything from Fish & Chips, Pie and Steak. I particularly enjoy their hand cut chips, which may give Bar T’at a run for its money.

Located on Church Street, minutes from the town centre, The Black Hat is a traditional offering, with a modern twist. It’s well known for its polished interior and the relaxed atmosphere that’s maintained here. On draft, they host no fewer than 10 draught lagers and beers – ranging from Birra Moretti to Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. They also have a range of wines, cocktails and bubbles. On a Friday, they host their weekly “Fizz Fridays” when there’s 50% off on bottles of house champagne (between 5-7pm.)

As well as an eclectic array of drinks available by the bottle and on tap, they have a regularly evolving menu with a selection of well-rounded pub food which complements their food well. What’s more, from 4.30 – 7 pm you can take advantage of their early bird menu which includes 2 courses for £12.95.

The Lister Arms is part of the Wetherspoons chain and is a popular destination for those looking for an affordable pint or a spot of comfort food. The team there are friendly and professional, they have an extensive menu consisting of everything from a Full English Breakfast to Pizza. Not only is it the cheapest pint in Ilkley, it also offers unlimited coffee for less than £2.

The Yard is one of my favourite places to visit when in Ilkley. They have an extensive selection of beer and lots on offer in terms of things to do. If you enjoy a couple of games of pool and playing on a quiz machine – you’re well catered for at The Yard. Their food is also well regarded and they serve a variety of bar snacks and main meals including Nachos, Fried Chicken, Burritos, Burgers and more! It’s a great destination if you’re out for drinks with friends. What’s more, the team there are really friendly and accommodating.

The Station is a traditional boozer found in the town centre. They have a couple of hand-pulls which serve real ale and you can always find the latest sports games on show here. They host regular events including a weekly quiz. The Station – as you might guess is found directly opposite the train station which makes it a really popular first and last stop for those travelling by train to enjoy an afternoon in Ilkley. The atmosphere is that of a local, although visitors are always greeted with a friendly reception.
