Explosion On Leeds Motorway Brings Traffic To A Standstill

Multiple witnesses reported the sound of 4 huge explosions and said that a lorry was on fire near junction 42 of the M1 in Leeds.

A closure was put in place and traffic was brought to a standstill.

Shortly before 5pm, Highways England said: “There is a lorry on fire on the hard shoulder. We have closed the carriageway for the safety of road users.

“There are currently 30 minute delays on the approach to this incident, spanning 4.5 miles back to J45.

“Average speeds on the approach to J42 are 9 mph. If travelling from further afield, pls consider using the A1M for the south.”

Four crews from West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service attended the scene and managed to extinguish the flames. The northbound M1 has been fully reopened but the closure between the slip roads still remains whilst the damage is assessed.
