This summer, the National Coal Mining Museum for England invites visitors of all ages to delve into a rich programme of engaging events, celebrating the camaraderie and resilience of coal mining communities during the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike. From beachside fun to crafty workshops, the Museum promises a memorable experience that honours the spirit of togetherness.
Seaside Fun for Younger Visitors
Children can discover how mining communities found joy in difficult times with seaside games and sandcastle building at the Museum’s very own beach. Alongside these activities, the Living History team will bring captivating performances that bring the past to life.
Crafty Creations for Families
Families can get creative at the Makers’ Shed, which offers free daily crafting sessions inspired by the seaside theme. These drop-in activities change weekly, featuring projects like puppet making and crafting classic Yorkshire flat caps. It’s a hands-on way to learn how community events supported miners during the strike.
STEM Workshops for Young Minds
For those looking to expand their skills, the Museum offers a variety of workshops throughout the six-week holidays. The Caphouse Creators programme, for children aged 7-12, includes making colourful glockenspiels, Pithead Bath soap, and poseable Punch and Judy puppets. The STEAM Club, geared towards 11-16-year-olds, offers activities like creating art with sunlight, designing with natural ochre, and even making ice cream.
Minecraft-Themed Escape Room
Every Friday in August, families with children aged 7 and above can participate in a Minecraft-themed escape room challenge. Quick thinking and teamwork will be essential as groups solve riddles and crack codes to complete the challenge.
Heritage Walks and Tours
The Museum also offers a variety of walks and tours. Explore the industrial landscape on a Heritage Walk, learn about the Museum’s innovative water treatment system, or take on a mining role in the Lister-Kaye Tunnel during the Hope Pit Explore, available every Sunday.
Special One-Off Events
The Museum has several special events planned for the summer. Celebrate Yorkshire Day on 1 August with themed crafts, pop-up activities, and a visit from some very Yorkshire dogs. On 10 August, CHaOS (Cambridge Hands-On Science) will facilitate a day of interactive science experiments, including demonstrations on how rockets work and what sound looks like.
Volunteer Open Days
For those interested in getting more involved, the Museum’s Volunteer Open Days on 9 and 10 August offer a great opportunity to explore the flexible volunteering opportunities available.
