A striking full-scale replica of a 16th century Spanish galleon is set to make waves in Scarborough this summer, with thousands of visitors expected to step aboard and explore the ship that changed the course of maritime history.
The Nao Victoria, the first vessel to successfully circumnavigate the globe more than 500 years ago, will be moored at North Wharf Quay from Thursday, 26 June to Sunday, 6 July. The ship will be open to the public daily between 10 am and 8 pm.
The original Nao Victoria departed Seville in 1519 and returned in 1522 after navigating across three oceans and alongside four continents. Under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, the ship’s crew completed a journey that remains one of the greatest achievements in navigation.

Now, residents and visitors alike will have the chance to step aboard the replica, take a self-guided tour of its decks and speak with the crew, who live and work as sailors did centuries ago. Families can learn about the historical and social context of the voyage and experience life at sea during a pivotal moment in maritime history.
The ship’s arrival follows the success of the Galeón Andalucía’s visit last summer, which drew large crowds and brought a buzz to the harbour.

Cllr Mark Crane, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for open for business, said: “Scarborough is a hugely popular destination for families, especially at this time of year, and it’s great to be able to add the Nao Victoria to the town’s offering this summer.
“It is a wonderful opportunity for visitors and residents to witness maritime history up close, jumping aboard a replica of the iconic ship that was the first to ever circumnavigate the world.
“There was a real buzz and feel-good atmosphere around the town during the Galeón Andalucía’s visit last summer, and I’m sure it will generate similar excitement when the Nao Victoria sails to our region in a couple of weeks’ time.
“The tourism sector is so valuable to the local economy, and high-profile arrivals such as this can only increase footfall further, which in turn can provide a welcome boost to local businesses, restaurants and accommodation providers.”
The visit is funded by Visit North Yorkshire, part of North Yorkshire Council, and supports the region’s £4 billion tourism industry, which employs 38,000 people across the county.
Lupo Bathke, logistics manager of the Nao Victoria, said: “We are so excited to sail into Scarborough, which we know is one of the most popular seaside destinations in the region.
“Our experienced crew are looking forward to meeting residents, visitors and businesses – and helping to share the incredible story of the Nao Victoria with them.”
The visit has also been welcomed by local traders. Rudi Barman, a seafront business operator, said: “The Nao Victoria is a truly striking vessel that will undoubtedly become a standout feature in the harbour, enhancing the town’s waterfront and complementing its existing tourism offering.
“We look forward to her arrival with great anticipation and commend Visit North Yorkshire and North Yorkshire Council for their vision in bringing this initiative to life.”
