Ilkley resident Kate Rogers is taking on the challenge of running a half marathon every month for a year, to raise money for local charity Carers’ Resource.

So far, she has completed the Ilkley Half Marathon in July, London Vitality Half Marathon in August, Leeds Half Marathon in September and the London Virtual Marathon in October.

Kate said: “I wanted to challenge myself and hopefully I’m getting fitter! I chose to run for a whole year because caring and supporting carers is not a one off, it is ongoing.”

Carers’ Resource supports adults and young people across the Bradford, Craven and Harrogate districts, who are caring for friends or family members. Caring for her own Dad and through her work at Bradford University, Kate recognises the importance of support for unpaid carers.

She said: “It’s like a minefield navigating social care services and it’s really important carers get the support they need. It can be difficult trying to get support and people don’t know or understand what is available.

“There are so many people in a caring situation, often caring for elderly parents and for their children. They can be caring non-stop and they have their own lives too. It’s really tough.

“That’s why is it so important to have a charity like Carers’ Resource that helps people understand what help is available, provides accurate and useful information and is there for carers. I think the work that they do is fantastic.”

Carers’ Resource fundraiser Claire Macina said: “We’re always really grateful for the support we receive from residents and businesses, and this is an amazing challenge that Kate has set for herself.

“The money we raise through donations helps us to give unpaid carers the support they need, whether that’s emotional or practical. We’d like to say a huge thank you to Kate – please support her efforts!”

Previously Kate has been involved with local street marathons fundraising for Carers’ Resource and she plans to join the Carers’ Resource team for the Great Skipton Santa Fun Run 2021, in addition to the Reading Half Marathon in November.
