JORVIK Viking Festival Returns for a Thrilling 40th Anniversary Celebration

York is set to be transformed into a Norse stronghold once again as the JORVIK Viking Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary in spectacular style. Over five days of immersive events, visitors will experience the excitement of Viking life, from hands-on combat and living history to dramatic evening son-et-lumière shows, all culminating in a grand parade of over 200 Vikings marching through the historic streets of York.

Gareth Henry of York Archaeology, the charity behind the Festival, said: “This is our 40th anniversary year of JORVIK Viking Festival, and we’re determined that those who follow in the footsteps of our Norse ancestors will not be disappointed when they get here. As usual, we are celebrating the end of winter in true Nordic style – so whether you want to learn to fight like a Berserker, make your own authentic pair of Viking socks, or just stand back and watch an army of warriors take to the streets, we’ve got something for you!”

At the heart of the Festival is a free-living history encampment on Parliament Street, where skilled craftsmen and traders will showcase their work. Visitors can explore authentic Viking artefacts, handle replica weapons and armour, and interact with knowledgeable re-enactors. “In the medieval period, the Vikings were known as fierce warriors; in our living history encampment, they are brilliant explainers and interpreters who love to talk about their specialist areas of expertise,” said Gareth. “We encourage all of our visitors not to simply walk through and observe, but to stop and talk to the re-enactors – it is easy to spend an hour or more just chatting about what life would have been like in 10th-century York.”

A highlight of the Festival is the March to Coppergate on Saturday 22 February, when over 200 Vikings will gather in Dean’s Park before making their way through the city to Coppergate. Spectators can line the streets to witness the spectacle for free before the warriors take part in the Viking Games at the Eye of York. The competition may be fierce, but tempers are sure to flare, leading to an epic battle between rival factions!

For those looking for dramatic entertainment, the Evening Spectacular at the Eye of York on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd February promises an unforgettable open-air theatre experience. Featuring the legendary tale of a sword that never misses its target, the show combines stunning performances, a thrilling soundtrack, and a fiery finale.

Families with young warriors will find plenty to enjoy at DIG, the sister attraction to the JORVIK Viking Centre. One of the quirkiest events, Poo Week, offers children the chance to recreate their very own Viking poo, complete with undigested seeds, bones, and worms, to learn about the diets of the past!

This year’s Festival also introduces a brand-new Top Trumps card game, celebrating Viking history with a city-wide trail. Visitors can purchase their own packs and even meet the game’s illustrator, Katie Smith, at an exclusive workshop for aspiring young artists.

The Festival coincides with the final chance to experience A Winter Adventure at JORVIK Viking Centre. This special seasonal attraction takes visitors on a ride through a Viking-age York blanketed in snow, with interactive guides sharing tales of survival in a harsh Nordic winter. Due to high demand, advance booking is strongly recommended.
