Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) is inviting the local community to take part in a unique project to mark the development of its new £100 million terminal expansion, with the creation of a celebratory Time Capsule.
The expansion is a key part of LBA’s plan to enhance the travel experience and further establish the airport as a gateway from Yorkshire to the world. The first phase of the project is scheduled to complete in summer 2025, with the newly extended terminal welcoming passengers later that year.
To commemorate this milestone, LBA will bury a time capsule on the airport grounds. The capsule will contain memorabilia that represents life, air travel, and the local community in 2025. It will remain sealed until 2075.
In partnership with local schools, sporting partners, media, and aviation organisations, the airport is calling on people across the region to contribute items for the capsule. These should reflect the spirit of the community and the world of air travel in 2025. Submissions will be judged on creativity and relevance, with selected items chosen to best represent the region’s identity.
To submit suggestions for the time capsule, visit www.leedsbradfordairport.co.uk/timecapsule. Participants are asked to provide a description or image of their item and explain why it should be included. The deadline for submissions is 22nd May 2025, and those chosen will be contacted to arrange the collection of their items. They will also be invited to the burial ceremony this summer.
John Cunliffe, Commercial Director at LBA, said: “We’re delighted to launch our very own time capsule as a unique way to celebrate this major milestone for Leeds Bradford Airport and the wider community. 2025 is a historic year for the airport, so we’re excited to see the ideas that the community come up with to capture the spirit of Yorkshire in 2025. Additionally, we’re excited to welcome passengers to our upgraded facilities this summer.”
The time capsule initiative is part of a transformative £100 million terminal expansion. The development will increase seating capacity by 83% and introduce new lounges, significantly improving the passenger experience. The second phase of the project will include a full refurbishment of the existing terminal building.
