Food lovers in Leeds may be in with a chance of a free burrito from popular eatery Boojum if England beat Ireland in this Saturday’s UEFA Nations League game.
The Irish-founded brand has lain down the gauntlet for an Ireland win but has pledged to give away 500 burritos to customers in Leeds on Wednesday September 11 should England somehow come out on top.
Confident Boojum announced the brash bet on its social channels today with a billboard pitting Ireland against England with a list of things ‘Ireland does better’. These include Eurovision, the Craic, cups of tea, fried breakfasts, a good pint and of course burritos. They’re now betting that football will be added to the list after this weekend!
Republic of Ireland are set to host England at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium for the first time since a goalless draw in a friendly in June 2015. It will also be the first game the England team have played since their Euro final defeat and the first in its post-Gareth Southgate era.
Kick-off is at 5pm and all eyes will be on the same scoreline to see who gets the win.
Boojum head of marketing, Paul McCullagh, said: “The Irish love a good punt and a bit of craic. What better way to add even more excitement to this highly anticipated game than to bet 500 burritos on it! It’s been almost a decade since the two teams met in Dublin, so it will be great to have the bragging rights in the bag once Ireland do the business.
“Of course, it’s all just a bit of fun. We’re located on both sides of the Irish Sea and absolutely love Leeds, the people and our new store on Merrion St., with big plans to open more GB stores in the coming months.”
Established in 2007 in Belfast, Boojum boasts 17 outlets across Ireland and Northern Ireland. In April this year it chose Leeds as the location for its first restaurant in England and opened to huge fanfare, with hundreds of Leeds foodies queuing around the block to get their hands on its famous “size of your head” burritos.
With an emphasis on fresh produce, generous portion sizes and bold, punchy flavours, all at an affordable price, the brand has a cult-like following with over 160,000 social media followers and is a firm favourite of the student community.
It is best renowned for its Burrito Bowl, which is the number six top trending dish in the world on Deliveroo and rated number one in all Mexican food on the takeaway platform.
If England win on Saturday, the big Boojum burrito giveaway will take place on Wednesday September 11 from 11:30am and will be first come, first served.
