Marston’s is teaming up with Paddy McGuinness to launch the Big Pub Quiz, a nationwide competition to find the UK’s smartest pub. From 1st to 22nd May, pubs across the country will host weekly quizzes, with 30 Yorkshire pubs taking part. Among those competing are The Carlton in York and The High Farm in Leeds.
The quiz will be held every Thursday at 8pm, with participants answering general knowledge questions through their phones. The quiz will be split into four rounds, with Paddy McGuinness presenting the questions live over the pub’s sound system.
Rather than team play, the Marston’s Big Pub Quiz will see individuals competing for the highest score. Players can take part in all four quizzes, and their scores will be added together for a chance to win a £5,000 cash prize. Each week, the pub with the highest score will be named the “Smartest Pub of the Week” and will receive up to £1,000 from Marston’s Charitable Foundation to donate to a local cause. The winning individual from each pub will also receive a £50 voucher to spend on drinks.
Each participating pub has nominated a local cause or project to receive the donation should they win. The pub’s winning team member and a representative from the local cause will meet Paddy McGuinness to accept the donation.
