National Coal Mining Museum to Host VE Day 80 Beacon Lighting and Evening Celebration

The National Coal Mining Museum for England is inviting the public to a special evening event on Thursday 8th May to mark VE Day 80, commemorating 80 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Running from 6.30pm to 10.00pm, the event will feature various activities, including live music, poetry readings, craft activities, and an immersive tunnel tour experience. The evening will conclude with the lighting of a commemorative beacon at 9.30pm, part of a national tribute to the sacrifices of those who served, including the often-overlooked Bevin Boys who worked in British coal mines during the war.

Event highlights include:

  • Lighting of the Beacon at 9.30pm, in honour of the Bevin Boys and all who contributed to the war effort
  • Poetry readings reflecting on wartime experiences
  • A performance by the Yorkshire Military Band
  • A traditional fish and chip supper
  • Evening tunnel tours showcasing the history of coal mining in Britain
  • Family-friendly games, quizzes, crafts, and refreshments

The celebration is part of a nationwide series of events organised by Bruno Peek CVO OBE OPR, Pageantmaster of many major UK commemorations, including jubilees and royal anniversaries. Speaking ahead of the event, Peek said: “It’s a time to pay tribute to the many millions who sacrificed so much for the freedoms we all enjoy today.”

More than a remembrance, VE Day 80 is intended as a celebration of peace, unity, and reconciliation. Over a thousand beacons and Lamp Lights of Peace will be lit across the UK.

Lynn Dunning, CEO of the National Coal Mining Museum, said: “We are honoured to celebrate 80 years of peace at the museum. It will be a poignant evening of reflection, unity, and celebration. We invite everyone to come together and commemorate the sacrifices made for the freedoms we cherish today, and remember the role of the Bevin Boys.”

The event is free to attend and open to all.
