Leeds has long been home to an impressive array of cinemas, from bustling multiplexes to iconic spots like Hyde Park Picture House and Cottage Road. Now, a unique addition to the city’s cinematic scene has arrived—a new private hire cinema at Leeds Dock that’s set to become a must-visit destination.
Located on the newly opened Level 2 of the stylish Department complex, this boutique cinema offers seating for up to 60 people, providing a state-of-the-art screen with a surround sound system. Perfect for private screenings, the cinema can be hired for £100 per hour or £700 for a full day, making it ideal for those looking for an alternative celebration space or even a quirky venue for a business event.
Whether it’s a cosy gathering to watch your favourite films with friends, a Christmas party screening festive films, or a company away day with a twist, the venue offers flexible seating options. You can choose between plush sofas or theatre-style seating, accommodating groups of 38 to 60 people, depending on your preference.
Amy Matthams, general manager at Department, said:
“The new cinema is an amazing addition to Department, an ideal option to go local for a private hire event at the movies, taking your pick of indies, classics or even your own blockbuster film. Alternatively, it’s a great way to change up your corporate event with a unique backdrop for presentations, speaker events or brand launches.”
The cinema will debut with its first public screening as part of Light Night Leeds on 24th and 25th October, showcasing a collaboration between local artists Francesca Bundey and Clifford Stead. The short film, SLIDESHOW, features vintage photographs of Leeds from the 1970s to the 1990s, set to an audio track evoking the city’s past and present. The screening will run between 6pm and 10pm on both nights, providing a perfect introduction to this exciting new venue.
In addition to the cinema, Department at Leeds Dock has rapidly established itself as a creative hub since opening in February 2023. The four-storey building offers coworking spaces, private offices, creative studios, and a variety of social spaces. Level 2, which opened this autumn, also features a content creators suite, podcast facilities, and an event space with a bar, all designed to provide a unique work environment filled with style and individuality.
