New Exhibition at Thackray Museum Explores the Power of Blood in Medicine and Society

A new exhibition at Thackray Museum of Medicine, Blood: Ties and Tensions, examines the role of blood in medicine, culture, and society. Running until 29 June 2025, the exhibition is co-curated with the Hematopolitics project, led by Dr Jieun Kim at the University of Leeds, and explores both life-saving medical advancements and the social and political history of blood.

The exhibition draws from research into blood donation in Japan and South Korea, offering fresh perspectives on objects from the museum’s collection. It also features Vessel, an immersive installation by Yorkshire-based artist Gemma Wood. The work uses light and sound to recreate the intricate patterns of blood vessels, symbolising the connection between blood donors and recipients.

Gemma Wood said, “I wanted to create a protective space where you could go to think and talk… it feels like you are almost in the space of a body, where you can really feel the blood moving around you.”

Visitors will also see The Blood Bag Project, led by Leigh Bowser, which includes collaborative sessions with the Korea Leukemia Patients Organisation. In addition, community groups have worked with the museum to design blood donation posters inspired by personal experiences and historical designs.

Jack Gann, Curator at Thackray Museum of Medicine, said, “As a museum, we are committed to expanding our programming to include more STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) initiatives. Art has the power to bring medical science to life, helping engage new audiences beyond our traditional museum visitors.”

As part of the exhibition, the April Insights lecture will feature Dr Jieun Kim and Dr Ros Williams (University of Sheffield), who will discuss the social and ethical implications of blood.
