North Yorkshire Council to Launch New Sport and Active Well-Being Service

This September marks the launch of Active North Yorkshire, a new sport and active well-being service, with Selby and Tadcaster leisure centres being the first to transition under this new banner. This initiative is part of North Yorkshire Council’s broader plan to bring all leisure services in-house, focusing on enhancing physical and mental health across the county.

Currently, the county’s leisure centres are managed by five different operators across the former district council areas. The move to Active North Yorkshire aims to unify these services, transforming the centres into active well-being hubs. While existing activities will remain available, additional targeted programs will be introduced to support individuals managing long-term health conditions.

The service will also expand locally-based activities and services and increase support for community-based sports. North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for leisure, Cllr Simon Myers, said: “September heralds the first stage in our exciting plans for leisure services in the county. We are bringing all our services under one banner and we want our facilities and services to be accessible for everyone, so we can help to improve the health and well-being of our county,” said Cllr Myers.

Starting September 1, customers at Selby and Tadcaster leisure centres will notice changes such as new signage, staff uniforms, and the introduction of a new customer app and web page. Despite these updates, they will continue to enjoy the same classes and activities and be greeted by familiar staff.

Selby Leisure Centre will be the first to move under the Active North Yorkshire banner.

Efforts are being made to ensure a smooth transition for customers, including direct communications to keep them informed and address any queries. Frequently asked questions are available to provide additional information at: www.inspiringhealthylifestyles.org/selby-district.

The rebranding will extend to facilities in the former Hambleton and Craven council areas starting September, with services in the Harrogate and Richmondshire areas transitioning by spring 2025. The final phase will see the inclusion of facilities and services from the former Ryedale and Scarborough council areas by 2027.

The decision to move to a new sport and active well-being service followed recommendations from the 2023 strategic leisure review, which also led to the creation of a leisure investment strategy. This strategy will assess the condition, future role, and sustainability of each site within the new service model, identifying where investment is needed.

With these comprehensive changes, North Yorkshire Council aims to create a unified and supportive environment that promotes active well-being and improves the quality of life for all its residents.
