An 18-month trial restricting overnight motorhome parking has been introduced at three popular locations along North Yorkshire’s scenic coast in response to growing concerns over public safety and the impact of motorhomes on local areas.
The new restrictions, which are in place from 11pm to 7am, began this week at three key spots: the A174 from Sandsend to Raithwaite, three miles north of Whitby; Royal Albert Drive on Scarborough’s North Bay; and Osgodby Hill and Filey Road in Cayton Bay, south of Scarborough.
Cllr Keane Duncan, executive member for highways and transport at North Yorkshire Council, said: “We welcome motorhomes to North Yorkshire’s coast. However, we do need to take action to manage this due to the sheer volume of motorhomes now congregating in hotspot locations. The restrictions are in response to an unprecedented level of complaints to the council and police, as well as safety concerns raised by the fire service.”
The new trial follows previous restrictions introduced in 2012, which were later made permanent in areas near residential properties. In contrast, restrictions were lifted on streets further from houses after consultation feedback.
Fire safety concerns have been a driving factor behind the restrictions. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service advises that motorhomes and caravans should be spaced at least six metres apart to prevent the spread of fire. The service has responded to several incidents of fires in the locations where the trial restrictions are now enforced.
Cllr Duncan emphasised that the trial is an opportunity to gather feedback from both local residents and visitors. “We are seeking views to help inform a decision on whether to make the restrictions permanent. We will also consider whether the restrictions need to be extended to other locations where concerns have been raised,” he said.
Public comments can be submitted during the first six months of the trial, with a consultation deadline of May 26 next year. To share feedback, visit North Yorkshire Council’s consultation page.
