Northern Ballet Brings Festive Magic to Yorkshire with the Return of A Christmas Carol

Northern Ballet is set to spread Christmas cheer across Yorkshire this winter with the revival of its much-loved production of A Christmas Carol. As part of a new national tour, the company will perform Charles Dickens’ timeless festive tale at three Yorkshire theatres, starting at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre from 7th – 9th November, followed by Hull New Theatre from 12th – 16th November, and concluding with a three-week run at Leeds Grand Theatre from 17th December – 4th January.

First premiering in 1992, this production combines the beauty of traditional ballet with immersive theatre to tell the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, Dickens’ infamous miser, and his heartwarming journey from grouch to a champion of Christmas spirit. The ballet was originally choreographed by Massimo Moricone and directed by Christopher Gable CBE. Upon its debut at the Theatre Royal in Bath, it became an instant hit, breaking box office records.

Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director, Federico Bonelli, has brought this classic back to the stage as part of his mission to revisit the company’s beloved retired productions. Following the success of this year’s Romeo & Juliet revival, audiences are eagerly anticipating A Christmas Carol’s return.

Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director, Federico Bonelli, commented on the revival:

Alongside exploring new stories that connect, I am passionate about preserving the heritage of Northern Ballet. This signature piece from the era of Christopher Gable, like Romeo & Juliet, was a landmark moment in the Company’s history and continues to be beloved by our audiences, which is why I’m so excited to return it to the stage this winter.”

He also highlighted the ongoing relevance of Dickens’ story, adding:

“Charles Dickens’ classic tale of redemption, with its message of human kindness and compassion, is something that resonates with us all, especially at this time of year. Its iconic characters lend themselves so well to ballet, and I look forward to seeing audiences of all ages enjoying the show with us over the coming months.”

Featuring colourful sets and costumes by Lez Brotherston OBE, and Carl Davis’ festive score, which blends classical music with well-known carols, the production transports audiences to a traditional Victorian Christmas. The ballet will be performed to recorded music and all venues will offer audio-described performances to ensure accessibility for those with visual impairments.
