On Thursday night, guests at The Coniston Hotel Country Estate & Spa were treated to a breathtaking display of the aurora borealis as vivid red and green lights illuminated the skies over the 1,400-acre estate. The rare sighting of the Northern Lights, due to a severe solar storm, coincided perfectly with the hotel’s Star Gazing Gourmet Evening.

Nestled near Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales, the privately owned hotel hosted the special event, with guests enjoying an unforgettable experience under the guidance of astronomer Richard Darn. The evening kicked off with a glass of bubbles, followed by a seasonal two-course dinner at The View Restaurant. After dessert, coffee, and an informative presentation, guests stepped outside to witness the dazzling Northern Lights, capped off by a laser tour of the constellations led by Darn.

Reflecting on the event, Richard Darn said: “Organising a star party to coincide with one of the best displays of Northern Lights in decades is truly excellent timing! It was a real five-star show by Mother Nature, and people simply loved it. It shows that if you spend time under a lovely sky, you can often be staggered by what you see. Combine that with fine hospitality, and you have a compelling experience that few will forget.”

The Coniston Hotel’s Star Gazing Experience offers a unique introduction to the beauty of the night sky, with more dates planned for early next year. The event provides the perfect combination of astronomy and luxury dining, set within the hotel’s stunning woodland and parkland surroundings.
