Oxenhope was a sight to behold on Saturday, 12th October, as hundreds of residents gathered for Sue Ryder’s annual Starlight Hike Worth Valley, lighting up the night in a heartwarming celebration of loved ones. The event, dedicated to supporting Sue Ryder’s vital healthcare services, brought together over 1,000 people for an unforgettable evening under the stars.
Participants had the choice of a 5k or 10k hike, and many embraced the festive spirit, donning bright outfits, neon face paints, and glow-in-the-dark accessories. The special evening kicked off at Oxenhope Railway Station, where walkers boarded the Starlight Express train to their starting point. From there, they set off along a beautifully lit route, winding through the Worth Valley and culminating in an inspiring display of community spirit.

A key moment of the hike was the opportunity to place personal dedications in the grounds of Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, honouring the memory of loved ones. At the finish line, participants were awarded medals made from sustainably sourced wood, a fitting tribute to their efforts in supporting the charity.

This year’s hike, sponsored by Stirk Lambert Chartered Accountants and supported by the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, is expected to raise an impressive £102,000. These vital funds will enable Sue Ryder to continue offering expert and compassionate care for those at the end of their lives, as well as support for people grieving the loss of a loved one.

Rachel Binns, Head of Hospice Fundraising at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, expressed her gratitude to everyone involved: “Thank you so much to everyone who took part in this year’s Starlight Hike. It was truly amazing to see the crowds shining bright in dazzling outfits and spectacular accessories, celebrating the memory of their loved ones while helping to raise funds so that Sue Ryder can continue to be there when it matters most.”
She also extended her thanks to the volunteers and entertainers who made the event possible, adding: “Without your support, we wouldn’t be able to put on this fantastic event each year.”

Last year, Sue Ryder’s hospice teams provided care to over 8,700 people, including those at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice and in their homes. The funds raised from this year’s hike will ensure that the charity can continue to offer this essential care and grief support.
The Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Worth Valley will return in 2025.
