Residents of Filey, Scarborough, and Whitby are invited to share their views on the current dog walking regulations in the area, as North Yorkshire Council launches a public consultation today (Monday, February 3). The consultation seeks feedback on the existing Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), which governs the rules for dog walking to ensure a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment for all.
The PSPO outlines important regulations, including areas where dogs must be kept on a lead when directed, rules regarding dog fouling, and dog exclusion zones. These measures aim to protect both the local wildlife and public spaces, particularly the popular beaches and open areas in the region.
Following a previous consultation in 2023 and based on the feedback received, the council has identified areas requiring review. Key proposed changes include the removal of dog restrictions from Olivers Mount playing fields and Tate Hill Beach, as well as the addition of Valley Road Gardens and Linden Close to the dog control areas. However, the regulations concerning dog fouling will remain unchanged.
Cllr Greg White, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for managing the environment, said: “We want to ensure that everybody can enjoy our picturesque beaches in a safe and clean environment. The rules are there so we can maintain our coast without compromising on safety or cleanliness. I’d like to thank those who shared their feedback in 2023, and we would welcome the public’s views on the spaces identified in the revised PSPO.”
The consultation will be open until Monday, March 17, and can be accessed via the council’s website at www.northyorks.gov.uk/dogPSPO. Following the consultation, the revised PSPO is set to be adopted in May, with the new rules taking effect soon after.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the consultation to help ensure that the final decision reflects the needs and concerns of the community, maintaining a balance between responsible dog ownership and public enjoyment of these cherished spaces.
