Reuse Santa Toy Appeal Seeks Donations to Spread Christmas Cheer

Residents across North Yorkshire and York are being encouraged to donate unwanted toys and games as part of the Reuse Santa toy appeal, now in its sixth year. The campaign, organised by Yorwaste in partnership with North Yorkshire Council and City of York Council, aims to bring joy to children and teenagers in need this Christmas by finding new homes for pre-loved toys.

Running from 18 to 30 November, donations can be dropped off at any of the region’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs). Last year, the appeal collected a record-breaking 5,000 items—around 30 van loads—an increase of 2,000 from the previous year. The toys are cleaned, sorted, and distributed to local charities and organisations such as Early Help, No Wrong Door, and Ryedale Special Families, ensuring they reach families most in need.

Cllr Greg White, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for waste management, said, “The Reuse Santa appeal has become a valuable resource for families who may be struggling with their finances. All we ask is that donated items are clean, complete, and in working order. Reusing items also helps reduce waste and keeps toys in circulation for longer.”

Yorwaste managing director Sandy Boyle highlighted the campaign’s importance amid rising living costs. “This year, many families are facing economic hardship. The Reuse Santa campaign can help by regifting pre-loved toys to children in the hardest-hit households. Any excess toys will be given to charity partners to raise funds for good causes.”

Volunteers are also being sought to help sort donations at Yorwaste’s Northallerton headquarters from 25 November to 13 December.

Toys powered by mains electricity cannot be accepted, but site operatives at HWRCs will be available to assist with other items.

Barbara Merrygold, North Yorkshire Council’s head of early help, added, “Instead of leaving toys to gather dust, why not give them a new life and bring a smile to a child’s face this Christmas? It’s wonderful to see the joy these donations bring to both the recipients and those involved in distributing the gifts.”
