A packed programme of free online events designed to raise awareness of abuse, neglect and safeguarding risks is now open to the public as part of Safeguarding Week 2025, which begins on Monday 16th June.
Running until Friday 20th June, the week-long schedule includes 65 sessions covering a wide range of important safeguarding topics. These include suicide prevention, domestic abuse support, online safety for children, fraud awareness, signs of radicalisation and the role of bystanders in spotting and preventing harm.
The sessions are a joint effort between safeguarding partners from North Yorkshire, the City of York, Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire, and are aimed at professionals, volunteers, carers, parents and members of the public. This year’s theme is “Safeguarding is everybody’s business” and highlights the shared responsibility to recognise the signs of abuse or neglect and report concerns.
Following the success of last year’s programme, organisers have expanded the range of topics and audiences, with many sessions suitable for those with no prior safeguarding training.

Cllr Janet Sanderson, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for children and families, said:
“Safeguarding is about protecting children and adults from abuse or neglect and educating people around them to recognise the signs and report concerns.
Each session will be delivered by motivational speakers who are experts in their fields. I encourage as many people as possible to sign up.”

City of York Council’s executive member for children, young people and education, Cllr Bob Webb, added:
“We’re inviting residents and professionals to learn more about how we can all play a part in identifying, reporting and preventing abuse. This is a great opportunity to engage, learn and help build safer communities.”
Heather Pearson, independent scrutineer and chair of the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership executive, said:
“Staying informed and educated about safeguarding is crucial for everyone in our community. By attending these sessions, you not only enhance your own knowledge but also contribute to a safer environment for all.”
