There’s something fitting about the quirky trend of vintage taking up residence in one of Yorkshire’s RIBA 2018 winning buildings. Following its £7M makeover, Square Chapel Arts in Halifax has become one of the most stunning examples of re-purposing, following the transformation of the 1772 Congregationalist chapel into a home for some of the coolest shows and events on the circuit, including Inspiral Carpets’ Clint Boon and singer songwriter, Beth Orton.
With the eclectic world of vintage offering the style conscious affordable access to everything from kitsch to classic modernist design, it seems the opportunity to host such an event under Square Chapel’s stunning glass prismed ceiling just felt right.
Maureen Wilson, executive assistant to the director of Square Chapel Arts, said: “Square Chapel hosts a wide range of events from live music to comedy to film and family events, so the chance to host a vintage fair on the premises feels very apt. Showcasing the sounds and sights of the past in this fabulously reinvented heritage building feels artistically and culturally right.”
The vintage fair at Square Chapel is taking place Saturday September 8 to coincide with neighbouring Piece Hall’s Heritage Open Day events. Eighteen handpicked vintage stalls will take up residence inside the Red Brick Auditorium, vocalist The Fabulous Miss G will perform a day long vintage diva set in the café bar and a (pre-bookable) swing dance workshop will be hosted in the Copper Auditorium. Square Chapel have also organised a special film screening as part of the event – the comedy classic, Some Like it Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.
The Woolshops Shopping Centre have also agreed to host a swing dance social in in the afternoon, which will give all dance workshop attendees, plus anyone else who fancies coming along, a chance to dance for fun and for free in their pedestrianised street.
Claire Walton, organiser of Yorkshire Vintage Fairs who will be hosting the vintage fair on September 8, said: “Old is definitely the new ‘new’, and vintage is the purest and greenest way of engaging with this trend so we are delighted that Square Chapel are letting us bring our stylish, fun and heart-warming event to the centre of Halifax, especially over the Heritage weekend. Our events usually attract a contingent of people who like dress up vintage which will look incredibly apt in this beautiful reinvented setting.”
