Whitby’s Fish and Ships Festival Returns to Celebrate Maritime Heritage

Whitby’s much-loved Fish and Ships Festival is back this May, welcoming thousands of visitors to celebrate the town’s rich fishing history and world-class seafood. Taking place on Saturday 17th May and Sunday 18th May, the two-day festival will feature a packed schedule of entertainment, hands-on activities, and live music, making it a must-visit event for families and food lovers alike.

This year’s festival promises a range of exciting new features, including the debut of the Fisherman’s Olympics, where local fishing crews will compete in traditional maritime tasks such as splicing rope, stacking pots, and tug-of-war. The competition will showcase the skill and camaraderie of Whitby’s fishing community, giving visitors a rare glimpse into the demanding work of the town’s fishermen.

Cllr Simon Myers, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for culture and arts, said: “Fishing is an important part of Whitby’s rich maritime heritage, and the town is renowned for the world-class seafood that it produces. The Fish and Ships Festival is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the town’s history and traditions while supporting local businesses and learning from talented professionals in the maritime industry.”

A number of local chefs will be putting on cookery demonstrations over the two-day festival, including filleting fish, preparing crab and lobsters, and the best ways to cook shellfish.

In addition to the Fisherman’s Olympics, the festival will feature a variety of other attractions. Visitors can enjoy live cooking demonstrations from local chefs, including Paul Gildroy, head chef at The Magpie Café, who has been a supporter of the event since its launch in 2019. The fish craft marquee will offer filleting demonstrations, crab and lobster preparation, and expert tips on cooking shellfish, such as scallops and crab.

For the younger festivalgoers, the festival’s craft marquee will offer hands-on activities like designing sailing vessels, searching for sea glass and fossils, and listening to maritime stories in the storytelling corner. Whitby’s local library, museums, and art gallery will be on hand to help inspire young minds and connect them to the region’s maritime heritage.

Notably, The Old Time Sailors will be performing a sea shanty flash mob, offering a fully immersive musical experience that harks back to the 19th-century sailor traditions. Bidi Iredale, a local actress, will entertain visitors with traditional fishing songs, and Animated Objects Theatre Company will perform their popular walkabout act, Galleons Ahoy!.
