Two Yorkshire holiday let owners are celebrating after taking home gold at the Sykes Gems Awards 2024. The Barn in Pateley Bridge and The Dairy in Haworth were both crowned winners in their respective categories, marking a proud moment for their owners and putting Yorkshire firmly on the staycation map.
Chrissie and John Shillcock, owners of The Barn, claimed the top prize in the Best in Yorkshire category. This luxurious converted barn sits on 13 acres of stunning grounds, offering sweeping views over Pateley Bridge and the surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The couple, who previously worked in high-end soft furnishings, have transformed the property into a tranquil retreat, showcasing their meticulous attention to detail.
Meanwhile, Caroline and Tim Ackroyd scooped gold in the Best Longstanding Property category for The Dairy, a beautifully restored 17th-century farmhouse. Nestled in the heart of Haworth, the property blends heritage charm with eco-conscious creativity. Over three years, the Ackroyds used upcycled and salvaged materials to create a unique space, featuring standout touches such as a copper bath with taps fashioned from a trombone.
The prestigious Sykes Gems Awards, now in their seventh year, celebrate excellence in the UK and Ireland’s holiday let sector. Thousands of entries were judged by a panel of industry experts, including Sykes Holiday Cottages’ CEO Graham Donoghue, and evaluated on criteria such as guest feedback, amenities, and overall style.
Chrissie Shillcock reflected on her and John’s journey since converting The Barn in 2020:
“Our favourite part of hosting guests is seeing their reaction when they take in the views for the first time. It reminds us just how fortunate we are to call this place home.”
Caroline Ackroyd shared what motivates her and Tim’s approach:
“We take pride in offering a sanctuary where people can truly relax and enjoy the charm of Haworth. Hearing how much guests appreciate the calm, comfort, and character of The Dairy is incredibly rewarding.”
James Shaw, Managing Director of Sykes Holiday Cottages, praised this year’s winners:
“It’s brilliant to see properties like The Barn and The Dairy recognised. Their owners have created spaces that deliver exceptional guest experiences, and these awards celebrate their hard work and dedication.”
