Yorkshire Water Invests £6.2 Million in Doncaster Storm Overflow Upgrades

Yorkshire Water is set to invest £6.2 million in four key storm overflow sites around Doncaster (DN5, DN6) as part of an ongoing effort to reduce stormwater discharges into local watercourses. The improvements aim to reduce the impact of storm overflows on Mill Dike, Swan Sike Dike, and tributaries of the Old River Dearne, with significant upgrades planned at Woodlands, Harlington, Norton, and Bentley Moor.

This major investment is part of Yorkshire Water’s broader £180 million initiative, due for completion by April 2025, to tackle storm overflow discharges across the region.

The four Doncaster projects include:

  • Woodlands Doncaster Road Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO):
A £3.6 million investment will see the construction of a 425m³ underground storage tank (12.5m in diameter and 6.8m deep). This additional capacity will reduce storm discharges into Mill Dike by 80%, helping to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall.
  • Harlington Mill Lane CSO:
With £1.6 million allocated for upgrades, this project will enhance pump capacity and introduce a new rising main. The result will be a 40% reduction in stormwater discharge into the Old River Dearne.
  • Station Road CSO in Norton:
A £550,000 project will install new valves, line 123m of existing pipework, and add three new manhole chambers. Rainwater planters will also be installed at Norton Junior School to slow rainwater flow into the sewers. These improvements will reduce storm overflows into Swan Dike Drain by 15%.
  • Bentley Moor Sewage Pumping Station:
With a £530,000 investment, improvements will reduce groundwater infiltration into the wastewater network, reducing storm discharges into Well Strike Dike by 50%.

Lumi Ajayi, Project Manager at Yorkshire Water, explained the importance of the upgrades:

“These four projects across the DN5/DN6 Doncaster area will help us reduce the amount of rainfall entering the combined sewer network and safely store more wastewater during periods of extreme rainfall. On completion, the projects will significantly reduce the volume and frequency of storm overflows and improve water quality in watercourses in the area.”

The work, set to begin this autumn, will be carried out by Morrisons Water Services (MWS) at Woodlands Doncaster Road, Harlington Mill Lane, and Station Road in Norton, with Peter Duffy Ltd (PDL) commencing work at Bentley Moor in late October. Yorkshire Water is working closely with Doncaster Council’s highways team to minimise disruption.

This crucial investment highlights Yorkshire Water’s commitment to protecting local watercourses and enhancing the resilience of the wastewater network in Doncaster.
