One of York’s most colourful attractions has undergone a rainbow transformation ahead of York Pride, which takes place on Saturday 8 June. The Coppergate Centre’s Brollywalk now features a host of rainbow umbrellas hanging overhead.

The 36 floral umbrellas, which graced the street throughout May, have now been replaced with multicoloured rainbow brollies to celebrate Pride month, and particularly York Pride, which takes place this weekend. The display is the second of five planned for this summer, with a new collection of umbrellas being installed each month from May until September.

“Thousands of photographs are taken each month of our Brollywalk, and we know that many people are making special trips into York to take pictures, so this year we have set ourselves the challenge of refreshing the displays each month to encourage people to return,” comments centre manager, Pippa Unwin. “These have to be the most colourful umbrellas it is possible to find, so we’re looking forward to the brightest start to the summer.”

Organisers of York Pride stopped by the Coppergate Centre as the installation was completed. Chair Greg Stephenson, commented, “It is fantastic to see venues around the city showing their support for York Pride and the LGBTQ+ community, and the Coppergate display has to be one of the most colourful ways we’ve seen so far – a great photo opportunity for anyone in the city this month.”

The Rainbow Bollywalk will remain in situ until the end of June when it will be replaced by a tennis-themed display to mark the return of big-screen Wimbledon to St Mary’s Square. All matches between 12 noon and 7 pm from 1 to 14 June will be displayed on a big screen, which has been sponsored once again by York Business Improvement District.
