Forget the house covered with the craziest lights or the world’s wackiest jumper – the search is on for the most Christmassy cat and most festive ferret to raise festive lockdown spirits.

Organisers of the Most Christmassy Pet competition say our pets have become even more important than normal as we’re spending so much time at home.

Anyone can enter by posting a Christmassy photo of their pet on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with the #YorkXmasPets hashtag.

Sponsors York Gin – who have an Instagram account for their distillery dogs and a cat called Rutterkin on their logo – are offering a £100 shopping voucher and a bottle of their gin to the winner, announced on Christmas Eve.

The start of the competition coincides with the launch of York and North Yorkshire Christmas radio station XmasMix Radio at 6pm on Thursday 12 November. The station will play non-stop Christmas hits until Boxing Day.

York Gin co-founder Emma Godivala said: ‘We’re obsessed with pets and Christmas at York Gin. There are two York Gin distillery dogs – and the team have lots of Old Tom cats too.

‘York is one of the country’s most Christmassy cities. We don’t have our famous Christmas market this year, but we do still have plenty of Christmas spirit.

‘As we’re all spending so much more time with our pets during lockdown, we thought we’d move them centre stage this Christmas.

‘We’re looking forward to seeing some fabulous festive photos of dogs, cats, rabbits – and who knows, there may be a tarantula box festooned with baubles or a lizard with its own Christmas tree.’

To enter, post a photo of your pet on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the #YorkXmasPets hashtag. The gallery of Christmas pets will be on the York Gin social media channels and yorkgin.com to give everyone a festive lift.

The winner will be chosen by the York Gin Christmas Crew and announced on York Gin’s social media accounts on Christmas Eve.

XmasMix Radio is playing wall-to-wall Christmas hits from 12 November to 26 December on DAB across North Yorkshire and online at yorkmix.com.
