Yorkshire Gins the Only English Winners in Major International Competition

Only two English gins have won a top gold award at a prestigious international competition – and both are from Yorkshire. Perfect timing for Yorkshire Day on 1st August.

York Gin Old Tom and Masons Tea Edition have won Gold Outstanding medals at the 2019 International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC).

Only eight gins in the world won this top award: Australia, Scotland and Sweden were represented – along with Yorkshire. And both gins have a true Yorkshire pedigree.

Masons Tea Edition is made with real Yorkshire tea. Meanwhile, York Gin Old Tom is flavoured with a Yorkshire White Rose mixture created by top Yorkshire chef Andrew Pern of the Star Inn, Harome.

Both Masons and York Gin have been winning medals all year – the win for York Gin Old Tom joins a gold medal it won at the Spirits Business Gin Masters in June.

On top of winning a Gold Outstanding medal for its Tea Edition, Masons also took home Silver for its Peppered Pear and Lavender Editions and Bronze for its Original.

York Gin Head distiller, and co-director, Harry Cooke said:

“This fantastic award couldn’t come at a more appropriate time – just in time for Yorkshire Day.

We’ve loved working with local Yorkshire chefs from the Star Inn. The locally-foraged herbs and the White Yorkshire Rose give our Old Tom a true taste of God’s Own County.

“And hats off to Masons – they’ve been trailblazers for Yorkshire gin and their Tea Edition is a worthy winner of the Outstanding Gold. “

Karl Mason, Co-Founder of Masons Yorkshire Gin, commented:

“After a truly testing year it’s fantastic to see that our Tea Edition is still loved by so many, and the award has come at a great time, just in time for our ‘Yorkshire Day (Week)’ celebrations!”

Cathy Mason, Co-Founder of Masons Yorkshire Gin also commented:

“It’s so fantastic to see fellow Yorkshire gin brands doing so well, so a huge congratulations to our friends at York Gin.”

York Gin Old Tom is slightly sweetened with a herb-infused sugar syrup made in the kitchen of one of Yorkshire’s finest restaurants – the Michelin-starred Star Inn, Harome. And its main ingredient is the White Yorkshire Rose.

The syrup was created by Chef Patron, Andrew Pern, who also runs York’s Star Inn The City and Mr P’s Curious Tavern as well as the Star Inn the Harbour, Whitby.

It’s key ingredients are foraged from local hedgerows and the Star Inn’s kitchen garden – the White Alba Rose also know as the Dog Rose (the White Rose of Yorkshire), along with Bronze Fennel and Star Anise. Angelica and pink peppercorns (Baie rose de Bourbon) complete the complex syrup.
