Yorkshire is renowned for its exceptional makers and producers, providing both locals and businesses with a fantastic selection of high-quality, locally grown and sourced goods. Farm shops in Yorkshire are perfect for picking up the freshest ingredients and delicious artisan treats, often featuring an in-house butcher and seasonal produce that’s hard to match for freshness in any supermarket.

Scattered across the county, many of these farm shops are based on working farms, meaning the produce you buy is often grown or reared just metres away. At The Yorkshire Press, we’re firm believers in the importance of shopping local, and farm shops not only support the local economy but also offer an eco-friendly way to shop. With minimal packaging and produce that hasn’t travelled far, you’re doing your bit for the environment too.

So, the next time your cupboards are running low, why not visit one of Yorkshire’s farm shops? You’ll be rewarded with the best of the region’s produce and a chance to enjoy some truly exceptional Yorkshire fare.

Must-Visit Farm Shops in Yorkshire…

Castle Howard Farm Shop

Where: Castle Howard, York YO60 7DA
Opening Hours: 10am – 5pm daily

Tucked into the old Stable Courtyard at Castle Howard – famously featured in the first series of Bridgerton – this charming farm shop is a celebration of all things local and seasonal. It’s packed with top-quality Yorkshire produce, from just-picked fruit and veg to crusty loaves, handmade pies from nearby Malton, and over 30 brilliant British cheeses.

A lot of what’s on offer comes straight from the Castle Howard Estate itself. The butchery counter is a highlight, with Aberdeen Angus beef, estate-reared pork, and seasonal game like venison and pheasant, all prepared by a friendly team who are happy to share cooking tips.

There’s also a great mix of local drinks, including Castle Howard’s own London Dry Gin, made with lemon balm from the Walled Garden and crab apples from the hedgerows. You’ll even find flour milled from wheat grown right on the estate, thanks to a new partnership with Wildfarmed.

Whether you’re stocking up for a picnic or grabbing a few bits to take home, the farm shop is a relaxed, down-to-earth spot that really reflects the character of the place – well worth a visit while you’re exploring the house and gardens.

Ludbrook’s Farm Shop

Where: Cottingley Cliffe Road, Bingley BD16 1UW
Opening Hours: Saturday 10 am–4 pm, Sunday 10 am–3 pm, Monday Closed, Tuesday Closed, Wednesday 10 am–4 pm, Thursday 10 am–4 pm, Friday 10 am–4 pm

Located near Bingley in West Yorkshire, Ludbrook’s is a charming farm shop that’s open seven days a week. Having quite recently dined at a similar establishment, targeting a similar demographic, I was keen to discover whether The Ivy Victoria Quarter lived up to its reputation or would be another ‘fur coat, no knickers’ experience.

I made a reservation for the evening of Thursday 31st March – a day during which we experienced snow, sleet, rain, wind and glorious sunshine all within a matter of hours. Freezing cold and slightly dishevelled, My husband and I arrived shortly before 6 pm to be greeted by a handful of colourfully attired staff members in the foyer. We were quickly led to a window table on the ground floor and asked if we required our coats to be taken. Once comfortable, we took a moment to appreciate our surroundings. With its glittering bar, gallery walls of modern art and opulent art deco accents, there was no mistaking that this venue was part of The Ivy Collection.

We requested still water for our table and quickly ordered a cocktail each. For myself, the Sparkling Peartini and for my husband, the Candy Floss Fizz. These arrived promptly and we were both pleased with our choices. The Sparkling Peartini was delightfully zesty with subtle floral undertones – certainly one I would order again as it wasn’t overly sweet. My husband’s Candy Floss Fizz, on the other hand, was a bit too sweet for my liking but he thoroughly enjoyed it and was particularly impressed with the generous cloud of candy floss it was garnished with.

When it comes to food, I usually peruse menus online and decide what to order before arriving at a restaurant. As the menu for The Ivy Victora Quarter is rather extensive, I thought it best to choose based on what I fancied on the day. Still, this took a great deal of deliberation. Eager to try a signature dish like their Shepherd’s Pie but also keen to taste new dishes and those that had been given a seasonal twist, decisions were not made easily. Once they were, we had very little time to wait before our starters arrived.

My husband opted for the Duck Liver Parfait whilst I chose the Roasted Scallops that had been recommended to me by countless others before our visit. The freshness of the accompanying pea puree and the crispy potato rosti contributed to making this my favourite seafood starter to date. Neither of us could fault the Duck Liver Parfait either. A golden disk of flaky pasty floated upon a silky smooth tarragon sauce, within which were tender chunks of rabbit, langoustines and sweet Parisenne carrots. Although the pastry lid was as light as a feather, the richness of the sauce made it quite a heavy dish and I soon regretted the side order of Parmesan and Truffle chips. You’ll find a cheesecake on almost every restaurant’s dessert menu and they vary considerably in flavour, texture and quality of ingredients. This was one of the prettiest desserts I’ve been presented with and it was just as pleasing on the palate as it was on the eye. Instead of being sickly sweet, the cheesecake itself had a slightly savoury taste and the base, which didn’t disintegrate into dust when cut into, was super buttery. I tend to steer clear of honey-based dishes as they can often taste slightly artificial. This one, however, delivered the perfect combination of flavours – slight saltiness from the cheesecake, a little tartness from the accompanying mango sorbet and natural sweetness from the Black Bee Honey.

The quality of the honey used in this dish certainly elevated this cheesecake from being a great cheesecake to an utterly delicious one. Black Bee Honey is a Wiltshire based company that supports and celebrates British bees and their keepers. Named after the native British Honeybee which, up until recently was on the verge of extinction, all their honey is unblended and unpasteurized. Entirely different to many you will find on supermarket shelves.

With a reputation for luxury, I had expected the prices at The Ivy to be significantly higher than they actually are. Granted, there are a few dishes that are at the costly end of the scale but you get what you pay for. Prices for main courses actually start at £14.50 (Shepherd’s Pie) which I think is very reasonable when taking into consideration the quality of the food and the exceptional service.

All in all, The Ivy Victora Quarter lived up to my expectations and in some respects, surpassed them. Far more relaxed than I had envisaged yet formal enough to make the experience that little bit special, it is certainly somewhere I would like to visit again; particularly for brunch or afternoon tea with friends.

Ideally situated in the heart of Yorkshire, this fashionable tourist hotspot boasts stunning architecture, historic attractions and an enviable shopping scene. With so much to see and do in Harrogate, it’s well worth spending a full day in the town at the very least. Peruse the many independent shops, marvel at the town’s historic baths or check in to one of the town’s luxurious spas and unwind with a treatment or two.

When visiting a new place, it’s always good to know what food options are available to you before you arrive. Harrogate is bursting with award-winning eateries, charming cafes and traditional gastropubs so it can be difficult to decide where to eat and at what time of day. Traditionally served later than breakfast and before lunch, brunch is a great mealtime choice, especially when eating as a group.

Over the past couple of years, brunch has seemingly overtaken Afternoon Tea as the favourite daytime dining concept and eateries across the UK are creating new menus and offers in response. Harrogate is no exception and there are now numerous venues offering breakfast favourites and lunch staples for an extended period during opening hours. If you’re heading to Harrogate in the not too distant future and would like to indulge in brunch during your visit, check out our guide to the best places for brunch in Harrogate…

Where to get a brilliant brunch in Harrogate

The Ivy Harrogate Brasserie

7-9 Parliament St, Harrogate HG1 2QU

Tel: 01423 787100

Probably one of the most elegant venues for brunch in Harrogate, The Ivy on Parliament Street offers all-day dining in a sophisticated setting. Boasting high ceilings, Art Deco features and some exceptional antique ornamental pieces, the dining room provides a luxurious setting for a delicious brunch. Don’t let the ornate decor fool you into presuming that dining at The Ivy will be a pretentious affair; brunch here is informal and laidback despite the astonishingly Instagrammable setting.

Brunch at The Ivy is served on weekends and bank holidays only so we recommend booking ahead. The Ivy has a superb reputation so it fills up rather quickly. Served from 11 am until 3:45 pm their brunch menu is one of the most extensive we’ve seen. Mainly focused on modern British cuisine, it features an incredible selection of starters and mains. All the breakfast and brunch favourites are on there such as Eggs Benedict, Eggs Royale and Buttermilk Pancakes in addition to British classics such as Fish & Chips plus some more unexpected offerings like Lobster Linguine. Prices for brunch mains at the Ivy range from £8.95 to £33.95 so there’s something on there to suit most budgets.

The Foundry Project

1 – 1a The Ginnel, Harrogate HG1 2RB

Tel: 01423 740701

The Foundry Project opened its doors in April 2017 and is now a hugely popular spot for drinking and dining in Harrogate. We particularly like the sound of their ‘Sophia Loren’ which is topped with caramelised red onion, goat’s cheese, smoky pancetta and crushed walnuts (£10.50).

Proove

261 Fulwood Road, Broomhill, Sheffield S10 3BD

Tel: 0114 294 518

Proove Pizza have venues in just three UK locations.

“Chow Down Leeds is a breakout star of the Covid era” – The Guardian

Chow Down, Leeds’ premier outdoor drinking, dining and entertainment experience is back for 2022. The popular venue will return to Temple Arches, managed by property group CEG, after a successful 2021 programme which included a scorching summer takeover and the fabulously festive Winter Village.

2021 saw punters descend upon LS11 in their thousands to enjoy the very best in street food, cocktails, craft beer and live entertainment and now Chow Down returns this Easter, ready to whet the appetite of those hungry for more. Launching 14th April, as the Easter bank holiday begins, Chow Down will run Thursday-Sunday throughout the year ‘til 4th September.

New for 2022 will see Temple Arches transformed into a sun-kissed summer haven with new resident food kitchens (Downtown Food Village), a new three-tier sun terrace (Sunset Club), the return of the Tipple cocktail bar, new themed bars (Tanqueray Terrace) and the ever-popular Drag Brunch all set in the grounds of Leeds’ biggest outdoor space.

Thrillseekers will be able to put their putting skills to the test down on the green at the glorious Palm Swings – a brand new nine hole alfresco crazy golf course that is certain to be a crowd par-leaser.

If crazy golf ain’t your cup of tee, then perhaps the return of Drag Brunch to Chow Down will whet your whistle. A whole host of stunning queens will strut the hallowed turf of Temple Arches for an array of incredible performances with the action set to your favourite drag anthems – you better dig out your best heels! Further themed brunches will be announced throughout the season.

Music and entertainment is never an afterthought at the venue. ‘The Bay’, another new part of the site, will host a 360 DJ booth featuring acts such as Greg Wilson, The Cuban Brothers, DJ Paulette, Norman Jay, Shades Collective, Mr Wilsons Second Liners and further entertainment to be announced as the season progresses. The themes for the music programme will follow a similar path to 2021 with Thursday night being live bands, Friday named DJs, Saturdays will have local music talent and Sundays will host brass bands.

Food fans will have lots to drool over as Residents Kitchens are back after a successful launch at last year’s Winter Village. The downtown food village will feature two resident kitchens and three weekly rotating kitchens. Chow Down has become known for its eclectic mix of rotating street food vendors, and though this year will be no different, the venue will also be welcoming a handful of traders for a longer stint, bringing fresh and different ideas to their menus across the season.

For the first 7 weeks, Chow Down will welcome MorMor (Middle Eastern, North African & Mediterranean Street Food) and Sarto (pasta, sharing boards and more) who will launch special menus. Joining the resident kitchen further down the line will be Boro Slice (Detroit Style Pizza) and parmo’s will be hitting the venue for the first time, with Parmageddon later in the year. Holy Mountain will also be bringing his incredible BBQ and the brand new steak restaurant from Asada Kitchen will be also joining later in the year to ensure a sizzling summer.

The Weekly changing Kitchens until the end of May include the likes of Bastards Bistro, Spuds and Bros, Little Red Food Truck, Twisted Meal, Tikka Chance on Me, Big Mouth Gyoza, Mans Market and new traders Bao to the Sando, keeping the line-up fresh with something different each weekend.

Matt Long, Founder Chow Down and New Citizens, said:

“Chow Down is back and we couldn’t be any more excited for summer! With our brand new Art Deco concept we have a host of new additions to our venue and some killer entertainment. We’re kicking off our reopening with a huge weekend – ‘We Are Fierce’ takeover on Good Friday and Norman Jay MBE spinning on Easter Saturday. As well as that we’ve got some exciting new acts playing throughout the rest of the season, and legendary festival act, The Cuban Brothers join us to set off the summer vibes.”

Dave Olejnik, Owner Sarto:
“Chow Down has been such a fixture on the Leeds hospitality calendar for so long that we jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it! We’ll be bringing a version of Sarto for the first 7 weeks that features all the favourites people have come to know, as well as new ideas and menu items that will allow people to share and enjoy the spring weather!”

Lucy Renshaw, Strategic Marketing, CEG:
“Chow Down was a huge success in 2021 and we are delighted to welcome the team back in 2022 for what promises to be the most exciting transformation of Temple Arches yet! There is a real buzz in the Temple district, and with our Globe Point development set to complete this summer, it will only get livelier.”

Simon Fogal, Founder, Chow Down/ Leeds Indie Food:
“The Winter Village proved the team at New Citizens can pull off an incredible user experience at Chow Down within such space limitations. Spring and Summer will be elevated again, literally. With different levels across the Sunset Club, the Tanqueray Terrace. It has me thinking about the sunny days, a few drinks, some golf and incredible food. The Resident Kitchens are back and we can’t wait to see what the chefs come up with through the whole season from Easter to September. We will have around 50 traders at Chow Down this year, which is incredible.”

Bookings for Chow Down go on sale Thursday 10th March via the website. Chow Down is here till September 4th but bookings will only be able to be made up and until May https://www.chowdownevents.co.uk/

It will also offer gin tasting, gin making and cocktail making classes. A shop will sell the full York Gin range.

It is the brainchild of the York Gin Company whose range of gins have won gold medals at the world’s top spirits competitions, and whose internationally famous shop on Pavement has been crowned one of York’s best.

Credit: Matthew Kitchen Photography

Coppergate has become one of the most exciting parts of central York. As well as the Jorvik VIking Centre and high end department store Fenwick, the hugely successful Hole In Wand golf attraction recently opened. And Clifford’s Tower, just a minute’s walk away, has just undergone a massive facelift and is due to re-open in April.

Bosses at York Gin are busy creating the three-floor attraction in the old Boots store. The artificial ceiling has been removed, revealing a ten-metre, cathedral-like structure. The Distillery will be on three floors, with the shop, gin experience and distillery on the huge first floor the 200-cover bar on the second floor and space for classes and experiences on the third floor.

Credit: Matthew Kitchen Photography

Says Marketing Director Emma Godivala: ‘We want The Distillery to be so brilliant that it attracts people to come to York – like the Minster, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the walls.

‘The Gin Lane experience will take visitors through the incredible story of gin with the sights, sounds and smells of its history from the last 300 years. It will be a go-to experience.

‘The Distillery Cocktail Bar will be the place in York to enjoy a range of gin and other cocktails and paired dishes. The interactive classes will build on our reputation for brilliant, fun and fascinating activities for people to do with their friends. The shop will be the place to buy world-class gin and top quality York-made souvenirs. All in all, we’re really excited to extend York’s reputation as a brilliant and interesting place to visit with a truly top class attraction right in the heart of the city.’

The company wants to encourage the local population to enjoy The Distillery and it will be offering schemes for residents to enjoy cut-price admission and offers, as well as residents nights and opportunities for local artists and musicians to display and perform.

‘We want The Distillery to make a major contribution to the continuing success of York. And we want to share our success with the city,’ says Godivala.

The Distillery is set to create around 10-12 new full time jobs and up to 20 part time, and will be open seven days a week.

York Gin has been working with York-based Native Architects, local construction firm TekContracting, as well as other local businesses including Haywards Electric, Millers of Haxby and PurePallets so far.

‘It’s absolutely vital to us to support and celebrate other local businesses – so whenever we have any work that needs doing, we always try to find someone York or Yorkshire-based.’

The story of York Gin

York Gin released the first bottles of York Gin London Dry on 1 March 2018, and has grown to be one of the best known local brands in the city and gaining national and international recognition.

The Distillery will bring additional employment, add a significant experience to the York offering for both daytime and evening economies, and will bring an element of manufacturing to the city centre – truly ‘Made in York”
