This Halloween, JORVIK Viking Centre is offering a rare chance to explore the darker side of Norse mythology with its Dark Saga Tours, taking place on Thursday 30th and Friday 31st October 2025.
“Viking mythology is full of mysterious creatures, treacherous behaviour and brutal slayings – and we’ve picked out the bloodiest for this Halloween’s special tours,” comments Mark Jackson, head of operations. “For two nights only, we’ll be parking up the Time Capsules that normally take visitors back to the 10th century, and walking around the streets of Viking-age Coppergate. That in itself is a unique experience, but add in our fantastic storytellers bringing the myths and monsters to life – just as the Skalds would have done 1,000 years ago – and this makes for an evening you’ll never forget!”
For fans of Viking culture, stepping off the Time Capsules and walking around the recreation of 10th-century York offers a rare opportunity to get close to the houses and people who populated the city streets. “They will be walking the streets with the lights turned down and a special soundscape adding to the atmosphere,” adds Mark. “This promises to be a real spine-tingling evening like we have never hosted before – a brand new way to mark Halloween!”
The tours take place underground, in JORVIK’s basement that runs the length of Coppergate under the shops and pavement. Visitors will stay dry and warm regardless of the weather.
Tours are for over 16s only, with tickets priced at £25 per person. Departures run every 30 minutes between 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm on both nights. Groups are kept small for an intimate experience, so booking in advance is recommended at jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk. Sturdy footwear is advised, as the walking surface is uneven.
The Dark Saga Tours come just before JORVIK temporarily closes from 3 to 9 November to prepare for snowy winter conditions and the installation of a brand new “time portal” giving a fresh glimpse into 10th-century York. Tickets for A Winter Adventure can also be pre-booked via the JORVIK website.
