The University of Hull has introduced a new £1,500 cash bursary to support students from areas with historically low participation in higher education. The initiative is designed to remove financial barriers for 2026 undergraduate and foundation year applicants, ensuring that a student’s background does not dictate their future potential.
The bursary is targeted specifically at new, home students living in postcodes classified as POLAR4 Quintile 1 or 2—regions where progression to university has traditionally been lowest. Recipients will receive the funds as a cash payment in their first year, allowing them the flexibility to cover essential costs such as rent, food, books, or travel.
Interim Vice-Chancellor Professor Kevin Kerrigan said: “Targeted financial support at the point of entry can make a real difference—particularly for students who may be questioning whether university feels achievable or affordable. This bursary reflects our values. Your postcode should never determine your potential—who you are should be more important than where you’re from.”
To be eligible for the award, applicants must:
- Apply for a full-time undergraduate or foundation year degree for 2026 entry.
- Live in an eligible POLAR4 Quintile 1 or 2 postcode area.
- Hold a firm offer from the University of Hull by 30 June 2026.
The scheme covers almost all undergraduate programmes, except for certain health-related degrees that are already eligible for additional government funding. The university has launched an online Postcode Checker to allow prospective students to verify their eligibility instantly. Qualifying applicants will be notified of their award automatically once they receive an offer of study.
Professor Kerrigan added: “We want to reduce barriers at a time when the cost of living is hitting families hard, helping students to focus on their future. With this bursary, we’re giving students the chance to study, widen their horizons and thrive at the University of Hull—regardless of background.”
