Transformational USA Space Mission For Bradford College STEM Students

A group of 30 students from Bradford College have returned from a “transformational” 13-day study trip to the United States, where they worked alongside experts at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and witnessed the historic launch of Artemis II.

The Level 2 and 3 Science and Computing students, aged 16 to 21, took part in a rigorous STEM programme that included building two-stage rockets, programming space rovers, and designing Mars habitats. To simulate the challenges of space travel, the group even undertook scuba diving sessions to experience weightlessness while performing underwater robotic surveys.

The trip was made possible through funding from the Turing Scheme and a contribution from Bradford College, ensuring the opportunity was accessible to students regardless of their financial background.

Andrew Ridley-Ellis, Bradford College Head of Science & Academic Support for Science & Digital, said:

“My goal has always been to ensure that all students get the same opportunities, regardless of background or circumstances. Some of these students come from areas with the highest levels of deprivation in the UK. A trip like this would be impossible for many of them, so being able to offer this opportunity has been an absolute delight.”

The itinerary also included a second leg in Orlando, where students attended a specialist STEM programme at Universal Studios Florida, designing rollercoasters and programming automated rides. The trip culminated at the Kennedy Space Center, where the group stood just nine miles away to watch the phenomenal Artemis II rocket take off.

Andrew Ridley-Ellis added:

“Seeing these students blossom over the two weeks was so rewarding, changing from shy young people who didn’t like new situations to confident individuals who embraced new experiences. To be there in person at the Artemis II launch and see history in the making was truly inspirational for everyone.”
