Fudge Kitchen York Celebrates 40 Years of Handcrafted Confectionery

An iconic fixture of York’s historic city centre is marking a major milestone this summer as Fudge Kitchen York officially celebrates 40 years of handcrafting artisan confectionery.

First opening its doors on Church Street in 1986, the independent confectioner has grown into a destination for residents, tourists, and families visiting the city. The shop is widely known for its live fudge-making demonstrations, where visitors gather around traditional marble slabs to watch sweet treats prepared by hand.

Reaching four decades of trading on the high street highlights the business’s enduring popularity, which the team attributes to traditional craftsmanship, live demonstration theatre, and Yorkshire hospitality.

“Celebrating 40 years in York is an incredibly proud moment for everyone at Fudge Kitchen. While we’re passionate about creating exceptional handmade confectionery, it’s our wonderful team who truly make the experience memorable. Their enthusiasm, personality and dedication have helped make the York shop a destination in its own right, welcoming customers back year after year.”

— Ian McCluskey, Director at Fudge Kitchen

The confectioner’s long-standing role in the city’s independent retail scene was also highlighted by local business leaders ahead of the anniversary.

“Congratulations to Fudge Kitchen on an incredible 40 years in York. An iconic part of the city centre, generations of residents and visitors will fondly remember not only the delicious fudge but also the friendly team outside offering samples and helping create lasting memories of York. This milestone is a testament to the business’s craftsmanship, character and enduring contribution to the vibrant visitor experience that makes York such a special place to live, visit and enjoy.”

— Andrew Lowson, Chief Executive at York BID

As Fudge Kitchen York enters its fifth decade, the shop continues to produce small-batch fudge using traditional techniques and ethically sourced ingredients.

To mark the milestone, the Church Street store will host a four-day Birthday Weekend celebration from 28th to 31st August. Visitors dropping by the shop throughout the long weekend can enjoy birthday festivities, special giveaways, and complimentary fudge samples.
