Planning Permission Granted for Scarborough Station Redevelopment

A multi-million-pound project to transform the area around Scarborough railway station and create a more welcoming arrival point has secured planning approval.

Construction work on the scheme is due to start early next year following approval granted by North Yorkshire Council’s Scarborough and Whitby Area Planning Committee. The project represents the most significant changes to the station forecourt in decades, redesigning the public space at one of Scarborough’s busiest gateways.

The project features improved pedestrian routes, new seating areas, resurfaced footpaths, tree planting, and enhanced public spaces. Key station facilities, including taxi access and disabled parking, will also be upgraded as part of the plans.

Funded through £6.68 million secured from the Government’s Local Regeneration Fund, the redesigns were created by architects and engineers at Align, the council’s property consultancy. Initial plans were submitted in 2022 by Scarborough Borough Council, prior to the creation of North Yorkshire Council in April 2023, with designs refined following work with the Scarborough Neighbourhood Board and station users.

“Securing planning approval means we can now move forward with significant improvements to one of Scarborough’s busiest gateways, creating a more attractive and welcoming entrance to the town for residents and visitors,” said Cllr Mark Crane, deputy leader and executive member for open to business at North Yorkshire Council. “The scheme complements other regeneration work taking place in Scarborough, including plans to revitalise West Pier, and we hope it can act as a catalyst for further investment and improvements in the years to come.”

Cllr Phil Trumper, chair of the Scarborough and Whitby Area Planning Committee, added: “After some changes were made to the application, the committee decided to vote in favour of this scheme. The improvements will make a huge difference to that part of Scarborough.”

Preparatory work will begin in the coming months ahead of full construction starting early next year. Further details about the project are available online at northyorks.gov.uk/scarborough-station-gateway.
