The Most Dangerous Roads in Yorkshire

Yorkshire is home to some stunning scenery, quaint market towns and historic cities. But, while driving through the county can be a great way to discover hidden gems, there are some hazardous roads that can make driving certain routes fairly challenging.

In the UK, someone is killed or severely injured on the roads every 16 minutes, but some routes prove more dangerous than others. It’s important that drivers take appropriate measures to mitigate risks and to protect themselves, which might include taking out gap insurance to help cover the cost after an accident.

Conditions can dramatically affect the safety of some routes with poor visibility and sharp bends contributing to the risks. We’ll take a look at some of the Yorkshire roads that are considered the most dangerous.

A1(M) Doncaster Bypass

High accident rates and challenging driving conditions make this a risky route for drivers travelling via the Yorkshire town of Doncaster. Part of the A1, this route forms a section of a major stretch of road that extends from London to Edinburgh. Driver fatigue is a common occurrence with speeding and tailgating also major risks. To mitigate such hazards, motorists should refrain from driving when fatigued and keep to speed limits.

A658 Harrogate Road

This road is notorious for narrow lanes, sharp bends and limited visibility. Connecting Bradford to Harrogate, this route is often congested and features heavy traffic volumes at regular intervals during the day.

There are many schools along the route, contributing to traffic hotspots. It’s also a main bus route with links to Leeds Bradford Airport

To make driving a safe experience, motorists should exercise caution around particular busy spots and adhere to speed limits. Extra time should be given when travelling in rush hour.

A171 Whitby to Scarborough Road

Steep gradients and challenging terrain make this road particularly dangerous in poor conditions. Drivers should take note of specific road signs warning of slopes and steep hills and should change gear accordingly. The road is especially dangerous for motorcyclists due to the sharp bends and national speed limit.

A629 Halifax to Huddersfield Road

This main route connecting two Yorkshire towns is home to narrow lanes, winding sections and frequent congestion. Care should be taken when using this route, especially by those who might not know the area as well.

Work has recently been undertaken to improve safety on this route for cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users with the aim of also reducing travel times.

A682 Burnley to Long Preston

Connecting the Lancashire town of Burnley with the North Yorkshire village of Long Preston, the A682 attracts many motorcycles due to its national speed limit and sweeping views. It is, however, considered one of the most dangerous with hidden junctions, blind bends and fast traffic and has accounted for hundreds of fatalities.

While Yorkshire roads offer extensive views and dramatic scenery, it’s clear that care needs to be taken on many of these hazardous routes.
