Audiences can step into the world of one of literature’s most iconic heroines as Northern Ballet’s critically acclaimed Jane Eyre arrives in Yorkshire this spring. The production will grace the stage at Leeds Grand Theatre from 14 – 22 March before moving to Sheffield Lyceum Theatre from 22 – 26 April as part of a national tour.
Based on Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, Northern Ballet brings this timeless love story to life through powerful choreography and live music. Jane Eyre takes audiences on a journey through the highs and lows of one woman’s life, from a stark schoolroom to the sweeping Yorkshire moors and the mysterious Thornfield Hall. With themes of romance, jealousy, and resilience, this dramatic tale showcases Jane’s unwavering spirit.

Originally premiering in 2016, Jane Eyre received a nomination for a South Bank Sky Arts Award in 2017. The ballet is choreographed by internationally acclaimed British dance maker Cathy Marston, whose other works include Snowblind for Atlanta Ballet and The Cellist for Ballet Zürich.
Set to a stirring score by Philip Feeney, featuring both original compositions and existing works, Jane Eyre also boasts designs by Patrick Kinmonth and lighting by Alastair West, who recently worked on Northern Ballet’s Casanova.

Cathy Marston said: “The Brontës’ stories are inspiring to translate into dance because of their intense emotional journeys, the backdrop of landscape and elemental forces that amplify these emotions, and in the case of Jane Eyre particularly, the range of wonderful soloist roles that add texture, depth, and warmth to the central narrative.”

Federico Bonelli, Artistic Director at Northern Ballet, said: “What do we all love about Jane Eyre? Her resilience, determination and steadfast knowledge of who she is as she navigates a life filled with turmoil. Combined with her love story with Mr Rochester, this story is perfect to be told through ballet. In our Jane Eyre, the dancing, sets, costumes, and music fully immerse you in Jane’s life. There is so much for any dancer to work with to encapsulate the layered characters and narrative created by Charlotte Brontë and even more for an audience member to enjoy in this beautiful retelling by Cathy Marston.”
Following its Yorkshire performances, Jane Eyre will tour nationally, including stops at Nottingham Theatre Royal, London’s Sadler’s Wells, and a final run at Norwich Theatre Royal from 20 May. To enhance accessibility, all venues will offer an audio-described performance for visually impaired audience members.
